Chrysler 140 Outboard

I just purchased a project boat with an older (198?) chrysler 140 hp outboard. The motor seems to be in good running condition and sounds good. I will eventually repower w/ a newer motor, but what should I expect from my current power? Has anyone ever owned one of these dinosaurs?

 

They were a decent motor in their day. Keep the RPMs to 4250-4500 and they will live forever. We have a 1976, 75 hp. that still runs good. Don't slack off on your oil mixture. We have always added 50% more to the 50:1 normal mixture. It will not foul the plugs. Another thing to watch out for is the CD box. NEVER put jumper cables on your starting battery wrong. ONE touch and you will buy a new CD box.

Chrysler was changed to Force when it was purchased by Bayliner and then it was sold to Mercury who stopped production in the middle nineties. Check with a Mercury dealer.

 

I've got a 115hp Chrysler I picked up for a whopping $20 cash. Of course, I'm short at least 1 cylinder sleeve as it got tore up when they chipped a piston while waterskiing ( previous owner ).

In my search for parts locally, I found http://www.twincityoutboard.com/
They have everything I could need for this motor, and can machine in new sleeves for it. Granted they are in MN, but they have just about anything you could want.
