AC 36 Foiling Monohulls

The AC75s will be much faster than a canting keel boat in conditions that they can foil in, which seems to be anything above about 10kn of wind (based on the limited information available from online videos of the roughly half–size scale model test boats). I'm sure they could make that lower if they wanted to.

Compared to a 75' canter, the AC75s are significantly lighter (they're about the same weight as an IMOCA 60, around 7,500kg) and have very little wetted surface. They can potentially do well over 50kn, but whether they do that in racing will depend on many factors. Winning a race isn't about pure speed, it's about who gets around the course faster, there are many factors involved.

Columbus 2021 will not enroll in the America's Cup, the second Italian Cup challenge presented in Imperia a few weeks ago, has not yet formalized the registration and will hardly do it from here to the deadline.​

There are rumours of a Dutch entry to AC 36, with the Royal Netherlands and Royal Maas Yacht Clubs mounting a joint challenge. Only two days to the nomination deadline (30 November) so I guess we'll know if it eventuates shortly…

A Dutch team led by Simeon Tienpont wants to participate in the upcoming America's Cup in 2021. The KNZ & RV from Muiden and KR & ZV 'De Maas' from Rotterdam have reported to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron as challenger for the 36th America's Cup. Tienpont, the former skipper of Team AkzoNobel and America's Cup winner, seems the ideal foreman.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Emirates Team New Zealand can confirm there have been an additional 8 Notices of Challenge received by the 5pm (NZT) deadline.

According to the supporting entry documents, only one of these entries is capable of immediate acceptance while the remaining seven notices of challenge carry conditions. Some of the entries are likely to be invalid, something which will be determined through a vetting process which will begin immediately.

A respected yachting commentator claims teams' preparation for the next America's Cup could be set back by up to three months due to technical difficulties, while a proposed second preliminary regatta could be scrapped altogether.

Peter Montgomery told Radio Sport the date syndicates will be allowed to launch the first boats on the water ahead of the 2021 event in Auckland will likely have to be pushed back by three months, after tests revealed that the foils featured on the radical monohull design couldn't cope under load.

"They've been doing load tests and they have been breaking and so there comes the issue," Montgomery said.

The INEOS port foil likely doesn't comply with the current rule v1.1. Difficult to know though without accurate dimensions.

If the foil is the full 4m width, anhedral can only be something less than 20°, maybe 15° max allowing for thickness of the foil and fairing at the T. More can be applied to a shorter foil, but it has to stay inside a roughly 4m x 0.7m box (more was allowed in v1.0, so the foil may have been designed to comply with that).

 

It seems there will definitely be at least 2 more challengers, with perhaps two more possible.

“As of today, there are two of [the 8 new] Challenges which are immediately capable of Acceptance. Immediate Acceptance means that all their requirements under the Protocol and Deed of Gift have been satisfied.”

“We also have several, what we call Conditional Entries. They are looking for variations of what is set out in the Entry document. These could be a World Series Regatta or pre-regatta in 2019 or 2020, in their home port. Or, they might be looking for a variation of terms on their entry payments.”

“All the entries have come from credible yacht clubs, although we are cautious we are very respectful of the entries they are putting in. They have all put in a huge amount of effort and taken a big step. It has taken a lot of courage for them to submit their entry. So we are treating them all with the respect they deserve.”​

There is room for 6 challenger bases, so the 7th challenger will have to find their own base. Bases are awarded in the order that challenges are accepted, so one of the teams that have made their entry conditional may have the added burden of finding a base.

Identities still haven't been revealed, but it's expected that the 4th challenger is the Royal Malta Yacht Club, at least according to the Times of Malta.
