What a shame! I wonder if he'll get a time penalty or DSQ?

Personally, I don't think the penalty was appropriate.

I am not expert on rules but I have the same feeling : why so much penalty, in the accident itself he lost few hours, he use his engine on reverse mode only and for evident security reason, the boat was then no longer to go at the same speed, the accident itself was an important penalty, where is the potential advantage which deserves so many hours of penalty ? Is 24h the flat-rate tax for the use of the engine for this race ?

I agree with you. He gained nothing speedwise from using his engine. His greatest penalty is what happened-to have the race committee add to that is terribly unfortunate. To have sailed such a flawless race and have that taken away from him is inexcusable in my opinion.

Gwenole Gahinet analysis of the Imoca race, inc. this comment about Alex penalty :
"Looking around the Route du Rhum website, I found a chart detailing the penalties. In that document, it is clearly stated that in such circumstances the penalty should be 24 hours. So, the punishment fits in with what is stipulated in the rules. But at the same time, it is hard as in the Route du Rhum, stopovers are allowed. In the case of a pit stop, you can use your engine without getting a penalty… Some work needs to be done to make the rules clearer about stopovers and removing the engine seal, so that the general public can better understand what is happening in our sport."

In Class 40, Yoann Richomme should finish tomorrow after leading the race from the first day, speed top, route top, boat preparation top, a master class. Really impressive, as we should say in such case, "remember the name !". As a remind, last winter, he was also committed by Beneteau to test the new Figaro 3 prototype in all conditions. As I understand, he would like to participate to the next Vendée Globe on an Imoca.
