UPDATE: FULL Press Release shortly...spoke to Susie again. advised her MRCC CHILE have a ship 400 miles SW now making way best speed to her, ETA about two days. Boat was PITCHPOLED stern over bow. She has cut hands a few paces, bruising and pounding headache after concussion. Now talking to MSOS UK the GGR 24hr telemedicine doctor for advice and check up. Weather is moderating a little. Boat huge mess down below. Not in danger for now.

Susie Goodall Racing was enjoying the sailing very well in 35/40kts when the safety tube of the Monitor wind vane failed. She dropped the reefed main then set the Jordan Series drogue as could not hand steer in building winds. Went below. Sometime later was gearing up to come on deck to check things when pitchpoled stern over bow. The mast and all poles lost. Windvane damaged by backstay. The drogue Bridle is still fitted but the drogue gone. #GGR2018

    ******************************
UPDATE: Susie Goodall Racing rang again. She is OK..Small amounts Water coming in through many holes in the deck filing bilge every hour but all pumps are fine. All battery charging has been damaged by salt water. Her emergency water was lost in the roll over when the cap burst. Broken glass jars and food is spread through the boat and over pillow and sleeping gear. All gear in the saloon has crashed forward and is a mass pile up. She is cold from time on deck and now will get warm and rest. When I told her about the huge following and good wishes from around the world she was VERY grateful happy to hear that but she is certainly very disappointed and feels she has let her followers down.

This race certainly seems to be disproving any belief that the older style boats are more reliable.

Pitch-poled stern over bow. Wow. I don't recall if I've ever read about a monohull doing that, particularly a heavier full keel boat. Must have been launched like a sling shot! The boat is getting closer to Cape Horn. There are two large weather systems to the west. This zone gets nailed by big storms just about every other day. All in all it's been a rough year for storms. I recall the Vendee race a few years ago. We got many videos of calm seas. That's definitely not the case this year.

One can't knock the old boats altogether though. Suhaili, sailed by the legendary Sir Robin Knox Johnston himself, is an old boat and still surfing the waves just fine. It's an old wooden boat and it's slower, but it's still got what it takes. It would be VERY IRONIC indeed if the newer spec full keel boats in the GGR were all damaged and had to fall into the Chichester division...and Suhaili took first place yet again. That would really be something else. The way things are going it's a possibility.

For now, my money is on Mark Slats. He's gaining on race leader Jean-Luc Van Den Heede, who has a damaged mast. Can he overtake him? I think so.

Tzu Hang (46-47' traditional long keeler) also pitchpoled, as did Sandesfjord, the similar-sized Colin Archer design that Erling Tambs got to replace his previous Archer design, which went on the rocks after being unable to tack in light airs. Tambs lost a crewman.

Suhaili isn't in the race, is she? I thought it was just showing up on the race tracker as a symbol of comparative performance. The skipper of the Suhaili replica has already been rescued.

She should be proud of herself. She has raced a bold courages race. She was just a little lax in the luck department. There is nothing she could have done about that.

Very glad to hear the rescue ship will be nearby soon. I must say, it is quite unusual to have the availability of cargo vessels within a few hundred miles of the GGR fleet. I wonder if the race organizers worked out a mutual agreement to facilitate that as a backup plan. Most of the time, particularly further south, there are no vessels for many hundreds of miles.

The GGR sailors can count their blessings no doubt about that.

There were a couple of mishaps allowing the accident. First her windvane failed and she lost the chance of running along the weather. Then she rigged Jordan series droque but seems obvious it break of leaving only the bridle attached the boat and let it pitchpole as a result.
Jean Luc did also pitchpole earlier but suffered only the damage on the lower shrouds attacment on the mast. The rig of his boat is shorter than the other competitors have and did save from further damage.

Unless my eyes are playing tricks on me it appears Jean Luc may consider a port call to repair his boat. If that is the case he will be jumping over to become the leader of the Chichester division. It does appear Mark Slats is gaining on him. If that continues Slats will be the new race leader barring problems with his vessel. We have certainly seen many surprises in this race so anything goes.

Here below is the last Jean Luc vacation 10 December : he, the boat and the mast is ok, during a day of no winds he could check the mast and all looks apparently right. So he continues like that, he does not mention the need of a pit stop. He just got the anti cyclonic winds of the south hemisphere, presently upwind in 20 knots, sailing along the Brazilian coast and hoping not to have too much counter tacks to do. Few days like that then the wind will be more from beam and the sailing more easy. Still 5000 Miles to go.

Glad to hear Jean Luc will be going for it after all. Even if he cannot keep the best speed at least he is putting on a valiant effort!
