5monkeys that design is fresh. Going to copy as I re-work the sole. Just keeping everyone appraised of the slow AF progress. Keelson mess is removed and planning out the replacement mast and trunk supports is underway.

I am attaching the bulkhead templates that I got from Canracer about 2 years ago. It's what I used as a pattern when I cut out mine. I think you will find them useful.

How are things going? Are you making any progress?

If by progress you mean planning, then yes! Since boats only seem to make one poorer (and I started at the baseline), I want to make sure to get this right the first time. So I'm taking the templates you sent and measuring 10X before cutting once.

Today I'm buying a quality piece of white birch for all components. I'm also measuring (educated guessing?) the approximate amount of fiberglass and epoxy before buying each.

My mother-in-law is in town this week (she's great actually) and wife agrees this week is perfect to try and finish the C-15.

 

I got a lot of work done the last week. So happy. I'll post pictures soon.

Got the keelson, spine, and compression post installed. The new bulkhead is cut and coated; will try to install this week.

Some parts aren't pretty. Glad it is all internal. The hull is noticeably stronger already - I am pleased. I'll post pictures soon.

 

Congrats on making progress. It can be really hard sometimes to move the needle on these crazy project.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the nudges. I've actually been doing a little work this month. It is so damn hot in Phoenix during the summer that there's no sailing and definitely no leisure work to be done in 115F. However, I am determined to get this project buttoned up before the election - Nov 6. You can see I've got the new bulkhead installed and I'm just glassing around the edges. I'm doing it through the cubby hole and a small 6x8 hole where I removed the compression post. So it's kinda a pain. I've made a HUGE mess on the deck and inside, but learned that it's better to do this in small pieces rather than try to knock it out all at once. When I was glassing the keelson to the hull I had to do it twice because I'd mix a batch of resin, lay a a bunch of glass. Then not be able to manage getting it all to stay flat before the resin hardened.

So I had to learn to keep the resin temperature cooler, mix in less hardener, and cut all the glass ahead of time. Then I'd have about 10 pairs of gloves to change as I went along so that my ability to handle things was never too sticky. Most of what you see below I completed in May. It was hard and sometimes discouraging. I had to stop because... life. But I feel good about doing it again because I really just want it finished and accept that it must be done with a measured (not all at once) approach.

By the end of this week I'll have glassed the new keelson back to the centerboard trunk and (hopefully) install the compression post.

Do you guys have any advice on best ways to adhere the post to the hull, keelson, and bulkhead? I suppose just glass the crap out of it. Which is fine. I'll take some pictures of it before I finish it this weekend.

After I finish the glass on the inside I've got to lift the boat up and install the rubber I bought to replace the centerboard gasket. Then it's just putting all the hardware back on. I'm excited about that. This thread started to find a way to fix the traveler. I bought one double block with becket for my fiddle and a double block for my boom. I'm more comfortable this way than having the line feed down the boom to the transom. Anyway, let me know what you guys think!

 

Today I replaced the centerboard gasket.

Using the old plastic as a jig I drilled and countersunk holes in aluminum. Rather than sail paper I found a strip of rubber the right sizes and laid that.

 

Nice job with that gasket batten. I remember that it wasn't exactly easy. Are you running a one-side gasket system or is the other side still in the works?

 

It was something of a bear to do the drilling, countersinking, replacement. I did both sides. One gasket covers about 2/3 and the other the full area. Not sure how that’s going to work out.

I’ve also got the compression post in place. This afternoon I replaced the deck and glassed it all together.

The deck, in line w the centerboard trunk was cracking pretty far back. We were able to make some solid peanut butter for that gap and glass it back together.

It’s not pretty, but as far as strength goes, I feel really good about it.

 

What did you do for the compression post?

 

I wish I’d taken pictures. I’ll get on my computer later for a rough rendering. Basically teak bottom that straddles the spine and sits on the keelson. The top is marine grade ply to cap the teak end grain and give broader coverage to the space.
