    Hi guys,
I've scanned the web to look for some electric motors suitable to drive a boat, and very disappointing found motors with brushes and pulley drives and gearboxes :( How primitive and overly expensive.

This is the kind of motor that one wants to propel a boat with properly.

The guy was friendly enough to actually tell you how it works !

It uses ALL the poles in the motor, and not two thirds as in the case of a three phase motor. It is hence 30% more efficient off the bat. You do not need a gearbox. A motor like that has huge torque, that size motor delivers 200 to 250Nm, and if the proper materials are used as he explains, you won't have a prop speed issue either.

Since all the magnetic coils are in series, the current is less, compared to a three phase motor. At startup a magnetic sensor is used to determine the rotation direction and the control electronics simply reverse polarity if it is in the wrong direction.

I also see every one is into lithium batteries. Yes they are good but their life expectancy is poor, around 3 years if I have it right. Instead look for the LiFePO4 batteries. If you don't run them down below 50% capacity, they could last some 20 years. Yes they are bloody expensive, for me anyways, we don't have a currency in Sick Africa, but for you guys it will be a breeze. They also require a balancing circuit, which is a pain in the rudder.

And then I also see solar panel efficiency seems to be promoted to around 25% as to the current 15% to 17% efficiency panels. If these are made available then it will already have a huge impact in what you can do with these panels, including running your vessel while charging batteries. Apparently they convert a larger spectrum of light into energy.
There are some 1000W of power in one square meter of sunlight.

Combine this with nice technology like you find on trolling motors with auto pilot, and you have an awesome setup. This could change "sailing" dramatically, as well as simplify sailboats  all those ropes...

Had to try these smilies

Shame they didn't make it, but the intention was only to show what they did with the motor.

It would be nice if strategic partner Samsung develops the motor and systems further into a viable product and market it as such.

On that note, I just saw my first electric car ever on the road last week in North Carolina. And it had Carolina tags. I think it might have been a Tesla, I didn't recognize the logo or the car. I've seen a handful of hybrids before, usually with out of state tags, but this was the first all electric I've seen.

    Hi Fanie,

there are many ways to drive a motor . The 3 phase is very comon as industrie used it to drive maschines.
I have worked for a motordesign company and we have cosen many different motordesigns . Years ago we use the modular magnet motor. This motor has for every stator tooth a separate 2 phase controler. This allowe you to have a motor where the magnetsystem has , say 18 magnetpoles and the stator can have 19 statorteeth . Such motor has very low coging and all coils are dirven full time. In the last time we used 3 phase motors with Separete phase sector design. This has only every second statorteeth a coil and are driven by normal 3 phase controler but there it is also possible to drive it with a controler that feed all the 3 phase full time, see picture. Also there are other very good motordesigns like the axial flux motors , the Oxford motor or the transversal flux motor . These are all very high torque motor designs.
In the year 2000 i brought the sps outrunnerdesign to model builder world , a motordesign that is also a high torque motor that can also run slower , bigger and higher efficancy propellers. Have a look at model airplans , boat and drone coppters , they all use this small outrunnermotors in most aplicacions.Torquedo used this model motors for the first outborder design and for many other boat drives, i knew the people at Torqeedo when the start the bussines.

    Happy Amps Christian

I am with you on all points. However where in the video you saw that motor uses all of the poles not just third. What do you mean by that?

Those are lithium ion batteries. Also, running lithium ion batteries below 50% capacity does not damage them. Remember that capacity is measured in Watt/hr or Joules, not volts. Many sources refer to capacity as a minimum voltage.
