Sensible and safe foiler, sounds good. Wonder how long the manufactures can keep that amazing, for what it is price.

What specifically makes you say its a "safe" foiler?

Safety,
The foils are within the platform of the trimaran so safe for other boats and the crew if they fall off. On the downside would prefer unstayed mast or trapeze and stays inboard as in the event of a sudden deceleration the crew will impact the shrouds. I am sure this type of event happens was the pilots are learning to fly.

 

I've just received a further update from Len Surtees for his Sting 600 project:

"Sending this from a remote mine site, here for two more days then home to ready for launch.
Have attached photo of stbd hull (and port bow ) showing bottom skins ready to fit, then f/g and paint then turn over, fit decks, f/g ( just use light weight surf board cloth which is easy to apply with epoxy and minimal preparation for painting ).
Once this is completed, fit to swing beams, connect nets and ready to launch.
I expect to launch at end of this month then I will update web site with photos and hopefully some video clips.
Then all efforts will be to complete f/g molds of all foils, then sailing trials.
I have redesigned swing beams in plywood and timber and they have been approved by structural yacht engineer.
This will save thousands of dollars for owner builder but I will still supply foil wings and optional composite dagger board and rudder.
The price of plans will increase due to added work and costs to me for inclusion of swing beam details.
All hull frames will be full size along with metal components and rigging set up plus build material list and trailer dimensions. Also many construction photos and useful hints to make building more enjoyable."

I'm really interested to see this up and running as it seems to tick virtually all of the boxes I am after. I will be interested to see it in some chop and powered up though - I like the Weta frames with struts so the beams are further out of the water.

I found that having a similar approach on my "Isoproamaran" frankenboat was really useful to keep the beams out of the the chop when powered up. The floats scythed through it really well when really powered up and keeping the beams higher made it a bit drier but reduced the drag considerably.

Hi Doug

Arrived back home last week and today i remove the stbd float from strong back , sit in cradle and then complete deck, paint and fit to beams.

I have decided at this point to upgrade the center beam mounting brackets as they are currently bolted to inside of main hull.

As there is sufficient space at end of swing beams to main hull sides the idea of combining the auto locking brackets and center beam holding brackets as a single unit simplifies the set up rather then have two brackets. This is a smarter solution so am currently fabricating new bkts soooo launch date is now Monday the 30th July. I have chosen Monday as the weekend is so busy at the launch ramp. I plan to have a friend take some video clips of unfolding outer hulls, mast raising, launch and retrieval.

This is the plan Doug and at moment on track.

Update from Len , 7/18/18:

Hi Doug
Have attached a couple of photos taken recently, one shows bottom starboard float painted before removing from strong back and sitting in cradle. Now completing deck.
Other photo show how fwd foil can be raised to clear water in light air sailing ( foil shown is a mock up ), can't wait for the real foils.

Had a further update from Len yesterday:
"Yes launched at high tide around 11am at Tin Can Bay.
All went to plan, very smoothly.
Am very pleased with swing beams, attaching nets, mast raising and launch.
The auto lock for swing beams not completed in time so used the auto lock G clamps which allowed launching.
Also the bits that attach to trailer that support the outer hulls while trailering were not welded but again the trusty G clamps were used. This turned out to be a good idea as I'm thinking of lowering the main hull bow by 100mm on the trailer which is a better look, after adjustment then weld to trailer.
I didn't have time to take photos but I had a professional take some short videos and photos that will be put on internet and my web site soon.
So now its time to clear workshop and start all foil molds.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this in action in both foiling and non-foiling modes.

am having measurement problem for a stainless steel tri-toon pontoon large 4 mt long 12 mt and toon diameter 70 cm. Can u give me some accurate details about how much weight I can carry?
