Call Bob Andrews (604 220-6259) at Composites One, he covers your area and can walk you through the process, plus supply you with the correct products.

I'm no expert in the finer points of taking a mould from a plug, but I've never heard of a need for the plug to be finished in hard tooling gelcoat, sounds nightmarish to execute, but obviously you want a plug surface that is both slick and sufficiently resistant to indentation that might arise from, e.g., rolling out glasswork. Ondarvr has given you a contact who will be able to advise about material selection, I certainly was confused, to the extent I assumed the tooling gel coat you were concerned about, was that of the mould.

You’re right fall guy. No such thing as fibreglass resin. I was too lazy to type polyester resin or vinyl ester resin. My bad.

Ondarvr, —— thanks for the contact. I actually have bob on my email list to contact when I get going. He will help me set up an account. Up until now I’ve been buying smaller amounts of cloth and resin , 20gallons and two rolls at a time so I buy on Vancouver island locally. Bob is in Vancouver, a ferry away but worth the savings on larger purchases. I’m guilty of thinking of him as a salesman only and not so much of a material guidance counselor , thanks for the tip.

Sam Sam & mr efficiency —— thanks for pointing out that tooling gelcoat would be a poor choice for the plug. I had assumed tooling gelcoat for molds would be applied to a plug as well. Not ashamed to say I’m in uncharted waters here.
So pulling a mold from a plug painted with acrylic urethane will work fine? I will contact composites one tomorrow and get to the bottom of this.

Fall guy —- you are concerned about the forward section of the Carolina hull being a problem in the pacific. I don’t understand how seas in the Atlantic differ that much from the pacific that the hull design will work there but not here? Is there not a large offshore swell in the Carolinas . I’m truly asking for your opinion, I’m not challenging your claim. Need input. I’ve already had discussions with the designer and we have shifted the helm area forward explicitly for the need for better visibility and longer aft decks. The design I’ve chosen also includes a stepped or raised helm area from the aft deck for better visibility. But I want to know more about your thoughts on the effect the forward section (specifically the vast shear) and how you feel it will perform differently in my waters rather than her native waters.

Cheers to all and please keep helping me with this subject.

Bob is very technical, this is an easy project for him.

You really want to build the plug as a boat, at least " in the rough", that way you can water test to see if it meets expectations, and if it does, you can make the plug, and finish the boat properly, as a going concern.
