    Now he is in harbour in Camacha. Probably to fix the rudder issues and tweak various things on the boat. Next report will be interesting!

    I love Sven and I deeply care for the man BUT he has lost the plot. He has spent the last 7 years building the crappy noise (x 3) in his head. He is forever changing his mind whilst building, this is beyond experimentation, this is confusion reigning supreme. There are many of us, myself included, that wish that we could have the backup and means which he obviously has. The object of it all is to build properly, AND THEN GO SAILING. He started of with a "TEN" which he abandoned, and the next TWO builds that followed thereafter are both flawed junk.

    The very real problem, that sadly he will have to face now, is that support will diminish, credibility flies out the window, and the chances of a book deal fades over the horizons like mist before the sun.

    But as we know Sven is a strong man, very resilient, he will bounce back. I for one, have the greatest admiration for his tenacity.
    One thing he has proved beyond a shadow of a doubt is that he is a master mariner that can survive at sea like no other.

    It's actually the last 4 boats that by far failed to meet Sven's expectations:


    When extrapolating those year figures then Sven will set sail again in ± 2021, below the plans as for now and updated till some time before Sven set sail with ExLex...

    Anti drift device, my summary of the plans in their current status: one off center pivoting board on the starboard side, slot from bottom to deck, pivot pin above deck to avoid leakage and ease maintenance, the board extends a bit above the deck to be positioned directly by hand from the forward compartment hatch.

    Although I admire Sven greatly, he apparently lacks understanding of some fundemental peinciples of boat design. He apparently does not know how to calculate initial stability or the effects of moving weight on trim. His biggest mistake seems to be puting his deck work stations too near the ends of his boat.

    A more central cabin would have worked much better. His plan of manually moving his masts, while on deck himself, also seems to be a predictably bad one. A 41 inch wide deck and very low initial stability is an overboard waiting to happen.

    Devising a way to strike and set sails remotetely is one suggestion I would like to make for any future boats. ExLex was also rediculously underpowered. I came up with an S/D of less thean 4.0 for the fully loaded ExLex. It should have at least double that. It may be possible to set up a brail system for the balanced lug sails, so the booms could be pulled up to the yards with single lines to the aft work station. If ExLex were to be salvaged I would recommend using three sails as a working rig, making the boat a tiny three masted schooner. The booms could be lengthened from about 1.42 m to about 1.85 m, which with the same hoist, would increase the SA to about 7.8 sm. SA could then be reduced by first striking the center sail, then later by striking the end sails and resetting the center one. A storm sail could be set from the center mast. The main idea here is to keep the single heaviest objet on the boat, the skipper, as close to the center of the boat as possible at all times.

    The Steering problem could probably be solved with slightly less tight fitting pistons. The over all weight of the boat could be reduced by removing maybe half of the stores and having them shipped to a stopping off point along the voyage's way. If this plan were implemented, it may not be nessessary to lengthen any spars.

    It seems odd to do this voyage as a protest against the recreational craft directive when it specifically excludes experimental craft such as this. Also the poor performance and shortcomings in the design of Exlex seem to suggest that the directive isn't such a bad idea for protecting consumers.

    Naps doesn't seem to be any kind of marine quality, but they do claim to supply high quality for demanding conditions and a lot of experience etc...
    See the Naps solar cells heavy corrosion leaking down from the middle of the deck to the hull sides from 3:08 to 3:15 in the video, after just a few weeks at sea.

    . . . and note how stern heavy ExLex is here . . .
