Both scale and full size models of new automobile designs are sculpted using clay. Clay is applied in a layer up to a several inches thick over an "armature" made of wood and/or metal. The clay is then shaped using a CNC machine or manual sculpting. Final finishing is done by hand. The clay is a special modeling clay.

A fiberglass/composite body can be made from the clay model. First a set of molds are made by laying fiberglass over the clay model. The shape of the clay is lost when the molds are removed. The set of molds is then used to mold the body panels in fiberglass or another composite material.

Having an idea is not the same as innovating.

Actual innovation is successfully making something better. Not just different.

That's why I always ask to see the finished product - 99% of the time there is no report on the finished product.

Innovation is difficult and lonely. But if you cannot buck the negative attitudes you rarely will have the drive to finish successfully.
And current status quo is the result of lots of successful innovation - not necessarily repetition of poor practices.
