LVL Crossbeams

This is a remodel of a prior finished boat and KH himself has commented that he is not involved in the mods. This was a finished boat. And that beam was once across the opens.

Why anyone would cut across the aft beam is ?

And KH himself said the not transoms will likely fail first.

Since we are beating a dead horse, I figured I'd liven it up.

I can't understand his purpose for doing it other than access to the cockpit, but that would need to be from the side. So he wrecked the boat to save steps.

 

It could be re enforced in its new format. Maybe waiting to see whether the cracks start to appear is enough, if it is structurally unsound it will flex when under way you'd reckon.

 

How to reinforce it?
That hatch would have to be removed and the space filled in and then add a new hanging bulkhead fwd of that to pickup the fwd face of the transom.
Etc Etc. But everything would have to opened up to ensure load transfer is not across some air gap covered with a fillet.

 

eek the horse blinked..I was thinking an angle plate[ally] or strap[stain] with re enforced mounting points in the hulls, we need to get in there and have a look..ha , cheers

 

Get a large enough cattle prod and even a dead horse will dance.

 

With the hatch opening underneath it’s pretty much “snap on dotted line”
What’s really bugging me is he can afford to destroy a boat I can only dream of.
Such is life, the politics of envy is pointless.
Hopefully it’s a dock queen and nobody dies.

 

By the time it is all faired and painted it might fool any number of people getting into boats for the first time.
Should be some way to prevent its sale? What say the community?

 

..Well the problem has been publicized now[fair enough], due diligence , then any craft that pricey gets [ unless their mad]an automatic survey. the builder has already signalled his thoughts, it's pretty covered.

 

I think the thing that's being overlooked is that LVL could be cut into a space frame shape, likely without sacrificing much strength, whereas a solid piece of wood is going to be sensitive to the grain direction in a much more significant way.

 

Im thinking there are several lighter weight ways to use lvl timber and I’m assuming we are talking about laminated timber where all the grain is in the same direction.
Use the lvl’s top and bottom and box in the sides with ply to create a box shaped beam. Useful for main beam under mast main sheet,or similar
Or, use lvl’s top and bottom with one central ply web to create an “I” beam. Could be used for lighter duties such as the ends or as part of the bridgedeck structure.
Solid lvl is heavy and wasteful.
