    They are in the last 120 NM triangle offshore Nice that the organisers added (with 2 virtual buoys to turn) so to have an arrival at about 2 p.m., in line with the exhibition spirit of this first race in Med. The two Ultims are still very close and the result really uncertain,perhaps a slight advantage for Sodebo more often in the lead.

    Yesterday good wind at last and we could see regattas of 4 "Easy o fly", one Danish , 2. Swiss and Jean-Pierre Dick on the French one, the initiator of this new tri foiler Verdier design.

    A new generation Ultim Macif is decided for a launch in 2020 :
    "Very good news, with the extension of the commitment of Macif in sailing for four more years, that is until 2024. And that's not all, because the partner of François Gabart announces the construction of a new last generation boat. The Macif team will be able to stay ahead of other teams.
    With the trimaran Macif currently under construction for an upgrade, François Gabart and his team will be able to test things at scale 1, to build a new machine even more successful towards full flying. The only information provided on the calendar is the year of launching: 2020.
    This new construction, will put a new boat on the second hand market, which will expand the fleet of the new Ultimate Class 32/23.
    Alain Montarant, Macif Group Director: "We are proud of the continuation of this partnership, and as ambassador of our brand and through its many victories, François Gabart has made Macif more visible and more legitimate. Now, we want to accompany it in a new stage that will once again highlight our values and ambitions through its boldness and entrepreneurial courage, and always at the service of the collective ".
    François Gabart, skipper of Macif: "The whole team and I are very happy that Macif is renewing our confidence in this challenge, I look forward to associating again all the delegates, collaborators, members the Group in this unprecedented human adventure. Since 2010, I have seen an incredible story punctuated by exploits and victories that would never have been possible without the support of Macif, and I am proud to continue to uphold the values and colors of the Macif ".

    Sodebo eventually won this first Med event for Ultims marked by a high proportion of light erratic winds, in particular during the start and the finish in front of the public, which was frustrating and not rewarding for the organisers due to their great efforts to make this event attractive and spectacular. Mayor of Nice has announced an another Nice Ultimed in 2020 and is thinking about the start from Nice of a round the world big event for Ultims in 2021.

    Differential rudder t-foil lift? This was proven on the AC cats to add RM-I wonder if it is used on the big tri's? It would probably be the center hull and lee hull T-foil rudders since the windward rudder is generally retracted. May not be worth it since the ULTIM's* have the capability of using mainfoil downforce?

    *at least Banque Pop and Gitana 17 do

    From the latest Yacht Racing Forum:
    • Renaud Bañuls, Bañulsdesign, designing a new foiling Sodebo for Thomas Coville, and a number of foiling craft for weekend sailors: “After achieving foiling, the next big step is creating dynamic righting moment.”
    ======================
    Renaud, I think that has been done-a lot. On multihulls by Dr. Sam Bradfield(Rave, Osprey, SKAT), Greg Ketterman(Hobie Trifoiler and Longshot and others), Ron Price(Whisper cat) and a few others and by the designers of at least two of the newest Ultim trimarans-Guillaume Verdier(Gitana 17 and Maserati) and Vincent Lauriot-Prevost(Banque Populaire). And on monohulls by Hugh Welbourn(DSS) and several designers of the latest Open 60's(including Charal).

    Great article here about ULTIMS using a foil system with an adjustable foil on the daggerboard: Route du Rhum https://www.boatdesign.net/threads/route-du-rhum.60273/page-3
    A couple of quotes from the article:
    "So far we are not yet at the stage where we reduce the float size…."

    VPLP: "On these big boats, when you ease a sail, it is a pain because it takes so long to grind it back in. But here you press a button and the angles of incidence change. And with the foil on the daggerboard you can use it to alter the flight according to the wind. If it builds, rather than easing the sheet you increase the righting moment by increasing the angle and conversely, as it eases you can reduce it and let it fly more."
