Have to say I really like the look of what I can see so far.

 

Looks like what I have been wanting for a long time.
I sent a question just to try and encourage Surtees in his progress.
Hope he comes up with a "home builder" option.

I don't know if plans for the spars as well as he is offering to manufacture those and they certainly don't sound expensive to me?
I've just dropped him a line about the sails and wingmast set up as well.

 

Thanks. Yes, I've been trawling through youtube looking for Astus stuff. There's a lengthy piece on the 20.2 - the predecessor of the 20.5, which has some good film at speed.



(I should mention that the main hull is 19.5 feet, and so it sneaks in under the bar for this thread )

Patrick in France usually posts on this thread but now its my turn. He just sent me a link to a couple of videos of his home built plywood main hull Strike 20 trimaran, taken when out sailing a few days ago.

He is using a Nacra 5.8 beach cat for outriggers and a Hobie mast. This video shows him reaching fast, over 15 knots.



In an email he wrote "My friend at the helm is a long time Hobie 14 / 16 sailor (76 years old!), but he sails too conservatively for he is not used to screecher and spinnaker!"

And in this one sailing to windward. Over 10 knots at times

Patrick also has a Strike 15 trimaran and he is experimenting with curved foils on the outriggers. He wrote "Starboard foil broken again at 15.7 kt !" But he also wrote "So the top speed of the Strike 15 with foil is near the Strike 20 !"

There has been a mention about being able to fly the main hull on a tri. At that point, what is the real difference to a cat flying a hull?

 

Depends on the trimaran. Trimarans can be wider than cats the same length- even oversquare- and so can have substantially more RM when flying the main hull as compared to a cat flying the windward hull.

 

Aren't some cats also oversquare?

 

No, mainly because the beams would be huge and thus heavy. The trimaran scores as the individual beams are shorter, even though they carry the weight of an unused outrigger
