I'm thinking it's a T foil rudder but you are right it's hard to tell with not much to go on.

Here is Len's reply, first my e-mail:

Len, you’re doing some really great stuff. I was wondering about the sketches of the new foiler tri. I can understand the uptip foils on the amas but I can’t tell if the boat will have a lifting foil on the daggerboard as well as a rudder t-foil. Can you shed some light on that please?
I’ve been working for a few years on trimaran designs with uptip foils on the ama and a wand controlled mainfoil on the center daggerboard with a rudder t-foil also on the main hull.
Maserati, Gitana 17 and Banque Populaire have adopted that basic foil system as well. Enclosed are a couple of pictures of my test model.
Best of luck-I’m looking forward to see her fly!
    Take Care, Doug

    Hi Doug

    Long time since we communicated.
Sorry about delay in replying as i have only just returned from working interstate for an engineering company that call me up for casual work, can't say no as money is so good, but down side is i have again delayed launch of my new STING 600 FT & ST, hopefully end of May.
Thanks for your kind words, i think your tri foiling model is looking good, also a bit flash painted red.
STING 600 does not have a foil on dagger board(emphasis dl) as it should get up and fly close to 10 knots of speed, i have deliberately not gone "all out" in the chase for ultimate speed as my principal design objective is to produce a budget foiling trimaran that is based around KISS and is also a two in one design meaning one can sail without foils as a fast sports tri. There are no fancy gadgets and an average sailer should be able to enjoy the thrill of flying at a low cost.
I will sell plans and supply the composite beams and foils, rudder and dagger board, hulls are plywood and epoxy.
This is a simple build and later "all going well" a full composite kit would be made available.
over the next coming weeks my web site sting600.net will have lots of great photos along with pricing structure and features such as launch/sail ready in 15 minutes, this is a big issue as most trailer tri sit on hard stand or at home not being used as it all gets too hard to unfold and rig. STING 600 can be sail ready by one person in 15 minutes, that's FAST and its easy. I have applied my design brain to solve many of the set up time consuming items to a bare minimum.
I am happy for you to share this email if you like Doug, i have the greatest respect for your boating mind and pragmatic approach to designs.

    best regards

I love the look and feel of a simple ply design, it does look classic and beautiful. It’s all too easy to get caught up these days in the persuit of numbers while flying. Can’t wait to see the rig choice and see her sitting on the water.

I've also dropped a link in the 20ft trimaran thread as well but there is more info just available on the Len SUrtees Sting 600:

Anybody got any thoughts on what we can see so far? I really like the look of this.

A pity it has the Jim Brown swing wing folding. I've never been a fan due to the inevitable slop in the system.

It would be good to see a complete boat, on the water, before getting into comments.

There are sailing pictures and video in this thread. The designers and builders are some of the best in the US-probability is that it is very well done. However, I think there is a better foil system than the "z" foils they're using.

I've received an update from Len that the launch date is now expected to be 18th june and he is expecting to have video of it unfolding, rasing the mast and launching.

Received this from Len Surtees. I've written Len to ask about the "differential two stage" forward foils-see below:

    Hi Doug

Have a launch date of 18 June so can video outer hulls swinging to auto lock, mast raising etc , and launch and recovery. This will go on my web site soon after launch. The reality is it will be another two weeks before sail testing and plan to tow test foils first to get close to the sweet spot then full sailing tests. Developing a new design just takes time, the owner builder building from the plans would be three times faster.

Yeah I will keep you in the loop Doug. I don't look at all the web sites that discuss multihulls, I just stay the course for my own thinking, too many experts out there with conflicting views for me, haha.

Peter Schwarzel is about to CNC the last of the foil plugs being my differential two stage forward foils.

Boat weight has been creeping up as I weigh all completed items so now nearly 400 kg completed ( including full set of sails and OB motor ). After discussing this with Peter he mentioned that there are a few extra kg of lift in the foils as computations have been conservative so fingers crossed.

Its ok to share this email Doug if you like, thanks.

    Best regards

Another update from Len on the 600-and a response to my question about his "differential two stage foils":
    -----
    Hi Doug.

Just returned from the International Boat Show at the Gold Coast Queensland ( the state I live in ) and now am responding to your question.
All I can say at the moment till new foils are fully tested and all will then be revealed is that they are not twisted like a propeller.
Now here is a scoop for you Doug.
I have decided due to feed back from interested clients is that they wish to make the swing beams themselves. To this end I have had discussions with Peter Schwarzel regarding beams with marine grade plywood skins with internal timber webbing, all sealed with epoxy and and a covering of f/g 400gm double bi axile glass/ epoxy. Maybe a simple 1x19 ss wire connecting from the main hull above the water line to the underside of the forward swing beam may be needed which loosens when beam swings forward and self tightens as it auto locks in sailing mode. This will be a huge savings of AUD $5,000 plus as I expect the 6 beams can be built for under $1,000.
I will charge an extra $200 for plans to show how to build beams and all associated hardware.
This means I can concentrate on the composite foils, dagger board, rudder, and offer smaller items such as acetel bearing bushes for pivot pins and CNC forward foil deck fitting that allows for adjustment setting for the individual skipper that can be sent airmail quickly.

So there you have my latest thinking, make it cheaper for the builder, less work for me ( more time with my family ) exciting times ahead Doug, I would appreciate if you can share this email, I will update my web site nearer to launch date with all this information plus, many thanks Doug.

    best regards

Sting 600-- I wrote to Len to check on progress-this is his response:

    Hi Doug
Sending this from remote mine site, I get called away occasionally for up to 2 weeks, the money is so good I can't refuse, so launch date now will be early July.
Will update my web site early next week showing outer hull fitted to swing beams. The second outer hull is underway then launch time.
I have contacted Peter Schwarzel regarding wood beams and he is waiting for me to complete design then he will crunch the numbers.
I think this can be done which will save building costs but I will produce composite foils.
Have now finalised simple hardware for rudder foil trim and all bits can be fabricated by the owner builder, all parts will be drawn full size along with all frames etc.
    Best regards
    Len Surtees

Should be new pictures up on Lens website shortly. He sent me an e-mail about a further delay today but my response to him has been blocked for some reason --at my end. His website: Home | sting 600 https://www.sting600.net/

Another foiler. This is the Portsmouth Number returns for 2017 sorted by races, a very crude indication of the boats people actually sail. It is not until rank 15 do we see a boat with a trapeze, people want close competive racing and speed is very much secondary. Obviously there are groups of people sailing Moths and other performance boat is there a mass market appetite for foiling boats.
