Revenge for that cow-tipping prank over the weekend?

I work at the local golf links. Some mornings it's like Jurassic Park out there at 6:00 am. Deer and eagles and osprey and geese and turkeys and herons galore. Forty pound snapping turtles eating a grass carp carcass dropped by the osprey in the middle of the 18th green. Eviscerated beaver killed and left by the coyotes. And none of these critters move out of your way.

 

There's a San Diego, CA news story online today about a wild goose at a golf course, that's known for nipping people and generally being anti-social. But he lets one particular woman not only cuddle and pet him, but pick him up and carry him around.

We let our geese run loose on our property when I was growing up, and God help anyone they thought shouldn't be there. Geese can bite and peck, they can flog with their wings, and they can rake with the claws on their feet... 20 pounds of aggressive goose is nothing to take lightly.

They're also utterly delicious. Although I have nothing against turkeys, sometimes I envy the families in Victorian England who enjoyed a properly fattened Christmas goose instead...

It's "bring your boat to work day" tomorrow. We've had 9.5 inches of rain in six days, which is about 100 days worth normally. The flooding is bad, but so far it's been more in the wide-spread nuisance category than anything destructive. While messing around looking at flooding pictures, I found this one from the 1916 Asheville flood. A landslide took out the railroad trestle and left the tracks behind. Makes you wonder what those fishplate bolts are made of.
