    Safety is Everything

    Hi Jed,

I reall appriciate your words of advice.........

    1. Before I tear the mangrove, alot of people open up mangrove for shrimp farming and the govt. have no comment. Tarakan alone have over 1000 ha of mangrove convert to shrimp farm........ successful export and bring big jap money into the country. Now I for one just need 1 ha of exclusive place at the bank of the river 3 km from the sea. sluggish river not too much current and wave.......... ( but i still taking your word and will survey and be v.careful)

    2. For the much will be dredge by long reach exchavator rent for US$25/Hour. it will take muck and deposit it onto my dry land for filling. The mangrove will be dig 3 meter deep. Not expecting large boat at the moment...... If larger boat later will expand on other side of the water front.

    3. Max trawller and small sail. The sail park further out because its deeper the speed nearest to the pier because the most shallow. All waterway will have depth indication.

    4. Float........ I have order log Ulin wood for piling and holding the rise of the floating walkway. The main walkway will be at least 2 meter wide and screw and angkled to small wooden walkway laced with old cut up tires that spray with paint that glow in the dark. The pier itself will be fix wooden construction and cement........ the connected pier to walkway will be aluminium pattern with fence and roller at the bottom.

    5. Budget? I am a local company that have 20 carpenter and stone masonary..... another 20 muscleman at my disposal........ Total worker in my company are 200+ people. I will have initial budget of US$50,000, land and wood and cement excluded......

    6. I seen Dubai Palm Island where wave cut up beaches in curve changing the shore line shape...... I think I know what is a bend and how the water heurt the landscape....... I have a landscaping guy we will see where need renforced and where the mangrove need to be preserved....... no total brutal cut of trees of course.

    7. Dont worry, I have a few expat that are Geology and enviro freak that are my beer buddy and would like to see the Marina build. Heck we are goinin to have a party afterward with the Hash House Harrier for grand opening.

    8. Material and experts can be found as long as Balikpapan is still an oil city.

Thanks for your expert opinion. I will be on alert for things that might cause people harm. I will review law and regulation on marina, and make some of my own. Safety are something we gonna talk of before we built. All signs and sticker will be 3M scotlight for example.......

Cheer Guys......... fill this post with more comment ok Thanks

Hey Walle Walle..I do really like your project..plan properly and go a head man..sorry I had no experience with marina construction..Oil refining is my profesional field..anyway..I'am building a small one with slipway for my personal use..the one that we have in PD is too costly to keep the size of boat that I have. Love to take your offer to be there..hopefully can get my self free to visit you within this or next month..Good luck Walle..make it look traditional..with your Dayak touch..but real efficient..like the Japs..

    Welly,

Do you encounter storms? Typhoons? I’m not sure of your particular environment, but my only suggestion is that you hire a professional. Professionals carry liability insurance and if there ever is a life safety or property damage problem, then you have a scapegoat (someone to point the finger at, who carries insurance for such an issue). Professionals in your area will have experience that I or you do not have and can best assist you in creating a project within your budget. A professional will be the best money spent on a project like this.

There are many inexpensive designs for marinas and can be very safe if properly designed. Hiring a professional could save you big bucks up front and save you from litigation in the long run.

With a small budget, plan the largest strongest facility you can afford now and plan on adding on later. It’s better to have one solid pier that can accommodate twenty boats then a low quality pier that can handle fifty boats. You can also raft boats together and or use European style mooring (aft tied to pier and bows on anchor) without finger piers. This works great and allows flexibility in boat sizes.

You also need to provide a reason for people to dock at your facility…or an anchor to draw clients in. Other then providing for wet slips, provide a tiki bar, fast food, small store, restrooms, showers, picnic areas, all to go with the fuel. A bar is always a great way to generate transient day sailors. You can charge a small fee…maybe a beer or two for people who want to use the pier just to gain access to the facilities.

Make sure that you first test the ground for pile holding capabilities.

If you design the project correctly, (usually a professional will be able to help you plan the construction) you could build out a pad or roadway for the excavator to walk out intot the mangroves to start dredging from. You can dig a canal out to build the roadway in order to get the excavator out to the farthest point before digging it’s way back in. At the same time you should be able to drive out a pile driver and build the pile supports from the road bed at the same time. You can come back later to build the deck from the land.

Once the excavator digs the canal and the pile driver lays the pile the excavator can dig up the roadway and the opposite side of the roadway working its way back towards land.

Please post a sketch of the building method you are planning.

    Jed.

This on the River bed and contour below........

The river front will be excavate by layer like terrace rice paddy. each layer can be 2-3 meter. Each layer we give it a zone and a colour signiture. For instant the first zone are for speedboat and swamp utility boat that are small and unoticable if taken or stolen.......so need to park nearer to land. We have 2 possible watch post, one further near zone 3 cluster (2 floor post) and zone 1.

Second zone or parameter will be ( not fixed depend when work start) approx. 4-5 meter for small sailyacht and medium motoryacht. The deep end zone 3 will be 6m-7m deep...... making sure future lux ship can come in.

The contour below are re-enforced by siring by ulin....... the different level will prevent wave and erosion of the land. ( we also check current strength when normal, raining and when full moon ..... highest rise and lowest rise)

The design ensure a adjacient( ext. phase 3) unload/loading small port( cement 20 meter) with hydraulic ext boom 5 ton unit for logistic purposes only....... crane can be provided on request 25 ton wheel.

The main walkway will be ulin plank trim to 2m wide on the side bind by aluminium and weld. The plastic float below will be sort with one plastic factory in JaBoTaBek area, further neg. will ensure.

The main log post that secure the walkway will be pre treated in diesel and dry in sun for 3 month before using...... Ensure no bug can eat and rot the wood but also ensure no split.....( need to check does that pollute the enviro)
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Crazy as it may sound........ these guys who drink with me want the facilities handicap friendly meaning the floor are wheelchair friendly, the toilet and shop have handicap person in consider like different ink for colour blind, big written danger sign for near and far sighted glass wearer. A small drug store for immediate medication purchase. A questionaire for all people for their dietary and allergie history.

Working siren and muster point, booklet saying how to evacuation and find the extinguisher so as to use it, futhermore the sign of no firearm, drug, alcohol( unless beer ) and weapon. The compound itself will have 5 govt. trained security with 3 K9 with them at each shift.

P.S. These are just things we have to show we are human and care for the safty of the boater. If these are not good enough then sleeping 4star and travel by plane would be best option.:D

I'm slow, I know. But seeing that link from bhn above, made me think that perhaps it would be best to round up a group of australians, and not just "the west"? I mean, Australians build in the mangroves, they have the kit, they're close by, meaning you could buy certain things from ther, and they're "westeners" (I'm using that word, because that is the word used in the PM I got. I don't know if you also used it in this thread).

I am surrounded by Australian....... Nice bloke

    Yes Dear,

The Australian are great gossip guys over beer that keep information flowing, they are down-to-earth people with no false pretend (90% that I know). The hearty bunch that cant refuse an excuse for a BBQ party. Overall, They're people I have learn to live with while I was 2 years in Perth, Australia.

They have this landmass they sometime mistaken it for an island:p but know their ship and boat....... great fishermen...... so I guess they are no surprise being old in this trade and still consider one of the best professional builder as today. I will surely find out more from Australia..... but finding inspiring infomation from all over the world would be real fun.

Unfortunately I was a virgin when I was at Australia and come back home intact........ how sad.

Aw, coming home intact is almost, well, is quite sad, actually :(

Australians are great (worked as a journalist there for about a year) but the reason i'm saying it is because the europeans know shyte about mangroves, the wood we use is good here, and it is cheap because most of it is local, we're using the lowest common denominator (that is both good and bad), but the australians will propably know much more about woods, what they "demand" from a small pier system, and they'd properly be the ones visiting. The only thing I can say, is that americans will want 110V, but before they even come anywhere near you, they will have the converters and inverters necessary, so I think you should concentrate on the australians, so to speak.
