Hi!
After 40 year's in quarantine the test-results of the Mariner prototype is now said to have been released. Hope anyone has read it and can confirm that it was no good in the tank test either.

They try to have the bigger CP without raising the girth.
That is Mariner result. And Chance was right, it was other problems which are numerous in the twelve's, which make Mariner not as fast as expected, not the design per se.

Ted Turner summed it up well after the series was over and Mariner was badly defeated. At the banquet, somewhat inebriated, he said "Everybody knows, Brit, even a turd is pointed at both ends."

 

Many years after the fact Pete DeSaix (who ran the Stevens tank) claimed he knew Mariner was no good when Britt was testing the hull. I believe he told Britt the boat was not the best they'd seen. But Britt was very secretive and wouldn't allow anyone to see the data, Pete claimed Britt took it all away before they could do anything comparative with it.

 

Chance design???

Boat built in 1978 in Mathews County VA. Commissioned DAVEY LEIGH for Dr Chuck Lloyd. Raced on the Chesapeake and Smith Mountain Lake. Boats 36 feet long. Rig 45 feet and fractional. Headstay terminates 6 feet aft of bow.Hull is cored with FIBERCORE. Very light. Very solid. Previous owner said architect went to University of Michigan.

I do have it for mine: 44 ketch, 1972 by Fiskars in Turku, Finland.
