I guess lead acid batteries because of their weight, as the 10 tons of batteries are a part of the boat's ballast. Also the built started ± in 2007, with the battery technology from what is now a decade ago.

So, the sails failed, the diesel engines failed, and not a word about all the installed battery power, but since the diesels were the backup, those electrical systems must have failed too.

And then, just after the repairs in Newhaven, the Ecolution was forced to stop in the French Brest with a broken steel cable that operates the centerboard.

It needed € 3½ million to build the boat, and the repairs of the damage of the maliciously sinking on her berth needed another € 1½ million. - (links in Dutch)

Given how much "purchase" the centerboard has in the case . . . What does it have, 15% - 17% of its area in the case fully deployed? What's the worst that could happen. No excuse on a battery laden cruiser, frankly.

Gerard Dykstra was the NA of the Ecolution, and also of the Black Pearl, which has the same kind of systems*, but bigger, and maybe better ?

From the last above video, 1:08 to 1:14, quite a bit wake difference between Black Pearl sailing vs the much-much smaller powerboat at the same speed.

    Google translate describes the problem...
According to the builders, the Ockels boat has to do with childhood diseases.
