Gene-Hull : hull generation for sailing yacht early stage design

    I am pleased to inform about free spreadsheet applications Gene-hull dedicated to early stage design of a sailing yacht, based on polynomial functions leading to 2D faired linesplan, deterministic definition of the hull body and good regularity of the curvatures. 2 applications are developed, one VE for « V » shape hulls and one UE for « U » shape hulls. Here attached the common User Guide and examples of input and ouput.

    The input involved the necessary minimum of geometrical data completed with parameters which have local to global influence on the hull body. The input of data for a standard « inverted L » keel + a rudder complete the early stage design objective of these applications.

    The ouput includes the 3 views 2D, all hydrostatics data and ratios usually considered by naval architects, the computation of the hull with heel (in hydrostatic condition), a sum-up of the geometrical data for a transfer towards a 3D modeller, data to draw at scale one any section with including hull frames and deck bars when existed.

    The applications are free and open source, developed using Open Office Calc 4.0.1. (if any problem to open and use an ods file, you can download Open Office or Libre office according to : http://www.openthefile.net/extension/ods ) (for example, one can use the applications on Mac with Libre Office 3.4.5). I cannot upload the files with this message (.ods format files are rejected by the system), but if you are interested, you can email me at jfcmasset@outlook.fr and I will send them with pleasure.

    I develop these applications not only for the love of the art of hull design but in practice to have an easy tool which can be fast, creative, eventually fun instead of tedious, at this early stage needing numerous iterations, before turning to the 3D representation itself. The applications allow fine tuning, i.e. when modifications are so small that they are quite not visible on the linesplan but still have effect on parameters like displacement, longitudinal center of buoyancy , prismatic coefficient, wetted surface, etc ... I hope you can be interested and make profit of it, up to have fun with this parametric approach. Metric units are used for the input/output, but with a conversion in US units

    You can find here attached new 2.1 versions of the applications and corresponding user guides, which include some improvements like :
    - more steps of computation in the rear zone behind the aft perpendicular so to have better waterlines drawingg
    - more data provided in the output
    - for the double ended version : a better definition of the sheer line with less input parameters needed and an automatic regularity of the curvature in the midship zone
    - a "Hulls storage" tab where you can save the input data of your projects or the variants of a hull during the iteration process
    - in the user guides : more explanation on the section shapes combination VE and UE.

    By hoping you can make profit of these applications dedicated for early stage design (I have in mind to add a module 2D sail plan and a module mass-buoyancy spreadsheet to complete this early stage toolbox).

    Gene-Hull VE double-ended new version 2.2 :
    I have made some new improvements and bug corrections to the Gene-Hull spreadsheet application dedicated to early stage design for double-ended sailing boat. In particular, the hull computation with heel can now include the input of a trim angle so that it is possible to converge to both an iso-displacement and a given LCB (to maintain equal to the LCG), and the corresponding floatation line is drawed so that to help judge its relevance.
    Here attached are proposed :
    - the spreadsheet application Gene-Hull VE double-ended 2.2
    (an .ods file developed with open office 4.0.1)
    - the User guide,
    - Examples of hulls, free interpretation « inspired by » existing or historical boats,

    By hoping you can make profit of this application dedicated for early stage design : once the hull matches your goal and criteria , you can use the sum-up of the geometrical data given in the outputs to prepare a transfer towards a 3D modeller.

    In a coming quote, I will also release the versions 2.2 of the VE and UE applications (with inverted rear transom).

    As for the double-ended version here above, I have made similar new improvements and bug corrections to the Gene-Hull spreadsheet applications VE for « V » shape hulls and UE for « U » shape hulls. Here attached are proposed :

    I remind you that the input involved both the necessary minimum of geometrical data + parameters which have local to global influence on the hull body. Probably that the use of these polynomial parameters are not very intuitive at the beginning despite the illustrations given in the User Guide, so :
    a first set of data is anyway already in place to start,
    - t
    he data of a hull of reference and/or of hulls given as examples are there to guide you in your first steps,
    – you can test the effect of each parameter, including with very low or very high values so to better see the effect, and this « learning by testing » process will help you to progress rapidly,
