Naval Architect Career

OK Herbert, let me take a few puffs on your peace pipe. All is for given and thanks for the kind words.

When ever you are back in this part of the woods, give me an Email or PM and we can have a couple of frosties, needles to say, Castle....and we can work out a strategy to revolutionize the industry and become millionares in the process

Anton, the industry has not died, it is just not as "busy" as 15 or more years ago. Only the export cat people do really well, the other surviving. Usually in the old days you would see a boat or two in backyards as you drive trought the suburbs - nowadays it is rare to see a home build boat People just do not have spare cash anymore and as Herbert has pointed out, the swart gevaar had rocked the boat so to speak. Nowadays, they are the big money earners - affirmative action, bee, regstellende aksie ens - call it what you like, put us minorty in a big disadvantage in the earning stakes. The bad part is that they are not traditionally keen on water or sailors as such.

This is probably the very reason some local top designers emmigrated or closed down shop. Not enough interest in the "DIY" segment and not so many companies building or calling for new designs.

 

The Wish

It's my great hope that all of the South Africans, current and former, no matter their color, can get on with the process of change in a thoughtful and purposeful manner.

I know nothing of the real issues between the factions and to that end, I do not offer suggestions as to how to resolve the issues, as it's outside of my experience. I do, however, hope that one day you can all return to your homeland, if that is what you choose, and re-connect with the wonderful realtionships you may have with your chosen field of employment and friends left behind.

Every cultural and beautiful aspect of your homeland should one day be a place where you can express yourselves, personally and professionally, while enjoying what it is your soul sought in the first place.

Some of the most famous and successful Norwegian "Naval Architects" are actually just Architects, that is they have studied architecture and has a degree in that area. They don't design the hull, but decide the general arrangement of cruise ships and large luxury yachts.

 

Sounds like the way forward then, any way some one has to do all the boring stuff.

Pleased to meat you how's Norway don't you guy's build a lot of wooden boats up there. Oh and do you still were helmets with horns in them ?

 

Oh yes, and we have polar bears and reindeers walking in the streets
One quite succesful Norwegian designer is living in Anibes or Monaco I think, not far from you, sorry I don't remember his name.

 

Like we have lions and tigers in the streets of Cape town ?
Except tigers live in India.

 

I did not know this, guess they must also employ their share of interior designers too.
