    On the above linked page 84 there's also info about N.G.Herreshoff's Catamaran Amaryllis significant victory in the 1876 New York Centennial Regatta, which resulted in all multihulls being instantly banned from all organized racing.

    No, catamarans were NOT instantly banned from all organised racing. In fact any such claim is intrinsically extraordinarily parochial, for it implies that the USA controlled "all" organised racing. Anyone who thinks that should perhaps look at a map of the world and they will see that it includes other countries. They are called things like the United Kingdom and Australia. It is obviously a shock to many people, but the US does not control sailing in such countries.

    But leaving that aside, no such ban existed, and that could have been pretty obvious to the writers of the articles that claim it did. For a start, there was no central sailing body that could ban anything in 1876.

    Secondly, the cats were not banned. It simply did not happen. They were welcomed to race just as every other type of boat was welcome to race. The full details - as noted in contemporary newspapers where the regular and well-publicised "official" cat races were reported - can be found here;

    http://https://sailcraftblog.wordpress.com/2016/05/16/the-real-story-of-amaryllis-and-the-first-racing-catamarans/

    The Herrreshoff cats were NOT banned. They were NOT discriminated against. The facts were not apparent at the time those old articles were written, before modern on-line archives became available, but the truth is out there now. It's odd that multihull sailors, who often portray themselves as innovative thinkers, are clinging so tightly to this old and now discredited myth, instead of using modern technology to discover the true history of the type.
