Fossil leaves suggest global warming will be harder to fight than scientists thought | Science Magazine

Previous estimates of CO₂ levels when the earth was very warm suggested parts-per-million of over 2,000 (we are now at about 400 ppm). A new method of estimating CO₂ levels from ancient fossilized leaves suggests that those estimates are way too high. This implies that temperatures may be more sensitive to CO₂ then previously thought, and that temperatures may rise higher, for a given CO₂ level, then previously calculated.

Various methods are used to estimate ancient CO₂ levels.​

A study published in Nature Communications calculates that yields for wheat, corn, and soybeans will drop up to six percent for each day the crops experience temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) or higher. The use of irrigation can reduce those losses, but increasingly groundwater sources are being over-utilized.

Zoologists say dead whale in Norway full of plastic bags

Copenhagen — Norwegian zoologists have found about 30 plastic bags and other plastic waste in the stomach of a beaked whale that had beached on a southwestern Norway coast.

The visibly sick, 2-ton goose-beaked whale was euthanized, Terje Lislevand of Bergen University said Friday.

"The (whale's) stomach was full of plastic," Lislevand said, adding that its intestine "had no food, only some remnants of a squid's head in addition to a thin fat layer."

Lislevand says the non-biodegradable waste was "probably the reason" why the male whale repeatedly beached last Saturday in shallow waters off Sotra, an island west of Bergen, 200 kilometers (125 miles) northwest of the capital of Oslo.

It size — about 6 meters (20 feet) — showed the whale was an adult.
The U.N. estimates that 8 million tons of plastic trash are dumped into the world's oceans each year, he said.

African penguins are being ‘trapped’ by climate change | Los Angeles Times

A study in Current Biology describes an ecological trap for young African penguins. Warming ocean currents off the southern tip of Africa have changed the locations of penguin food sources, resulting in an 80% decline in the western penguin populations.

The stuff on the right is OK, collapsed spillway and all.

On the left is the path over the emergency spillway. For days they have worried about the main spillway problem and poo-pood it as not a problem, but all of a sudden the emergency spillway is ready to be undermined, creating a 30 foot deep gash in the dam, releasing 350,000 acre feet of water.



I've no idea how much that is, but it is a phuckload for those in the know. Evacuations are under way.

I was just reading about Curio Bay and had to wonder who cut down all the petrified trees. Did his chainsaw have a diamond studded chain?

 

It is interesting that the place was flooded and re-vegetated at least 4 times over 20,000 years, well before the Industrial Age.
