boat yards sydney/central coast

Hi all.

I've come south for a week for my brother's wedding and some other stuff. While I'm down here I might have some time to poke about a bit so I was wondering if there are any boat yards like Shawn Arbor's one in Brisbane ? Somewhere where multihulls congregate for refits or perhaps to die.

Always love seeing old multis, and the unusual...

While I'm asking, are there any other's around south east queensland like that ? I had read some years back there was one somewhere around caboolture ?

 

Not any yards like Shaun's down here which is a bummer, everything is expensive and a hassle. You probably mean Monty's at Caboolture. Interesting spot.

 

Yeah, the scene has changed, there's still a couple of DIY yards but land values killing that on the waterfront through owners needing to capture the work & turnover through their businesses. One yard I know of is slowly dying as so much value in the second hand market now but back in the nineties was a steadyish turnout... not now though just old boats go to die & the yard owner is often left with possession of shlt heaps and disposal costs that people walk away from.

I must go up to caboolture and have a look, and maybe have another poke around Shawn Arbor's yard.

I was told of a couple of yards at Toronto but no idea if there are any multis or even sail boats in there. Maybe next time...

There is a prout sirocco in the UK agonizingly cheap, but I can't see a way to ship it at a price that makes any sense.

 

If you are ever in Melbourne you should check out Allcraft Marine at Cannons Creek. It captures that sense of dream and desolation all in one place with new projects being built and half finished hulls in various stages of disrepair.

 

The yard at Toronto isn't worth the drive. There is rarely a multi there. There is a yard at Woolaware Bay near Caringbah in Sydney's south that I visit but it is changing character. The expensive real estate is now right up against it. There is one build of a tri that looks like a modified Cirro tri. It was being built when I moved down to Botany Bay on my Twiggy, back in 1990. It is still there and the owner was still living above it in a tiny alcove a year ago when I last visited. I really hope he gets it in the water.

There was a cirro advertised I think last year. I corresponded with the seller and they claimed it was the prototype,mostly ply one glass float. When it eventually sold it didn't fetch much.

It's funny there was a wave of ply "projects" on offer until about 6 months ago. Now they have all disappeared.

Lots of optimists though, always plenty of them....

Thank you for the heads up on toronto. I'll not go out of my way. I've been making regular trips to the central coast looking at land but now the prices are insane I've given up, for now. Still suffering in the queensland heat. Must move south...
