Building your own yacht in Thailand or ...

DR, hadn't thought about that! Good Idea!

My version of the SIG will have full hard top and soft windows like the Maine Cat. It's not that I am in a huge hurry to get anywhere, in another thread we discussed all the ways we can cut back on build cost and time, one of them was to get rid of the salon. ... But I do like the idea of being able to sail in light winds, don't want to motor unless I am docking or running shallows.

 

For others interested ... phuketboatyard.com will rent you a 15 meter by 30 meter building with electric and water and bathroom for 50,000 baht mo. That is just under $1,500 which is what they want to charge me here in Fl. That is for a 6 mo. contract

I love the idea of building in Thailand or some other country, change of scenery but got to figure out all the legal, tax and registration issues too.

I believe you could find a number of competitive places to build.

Another consideration should be the available of materials, and a somewhat knowledgeable labor source. For those 2 reasons I would look at what deal I could work out with Serenity ShipYard/Ocean Marina that I talk about here.

Wilderness 1340 construction

At one point I met the fellow who built this boat there at Serenity. It was a marvelous job with a number of unique ideas.

He had the basic hull and deck constructed by Serenity, then finished off a lot of the vessel on his own.

That 'picnic cat' I have spoken of was built of wood epoxy at another location in Thailand. They have built at least 2. It operates out of Ocean Marina.

I am interested in finding out more about this vessel(s), and visiting and talking with yard that built them.

That picnic cat concept is very close to what I am talking about, open cockpit with bimini and roll/fold down protection when needed )) The one I have in mind would be larger and more elegant so I can pitch it to my market. The problem with me using another builder is money. I think I touched on my bkgnd in the other thread CNC plans. I have a lot of experience in building and building management and am fully comfortable with the scope of the work and I enjoy building it also keeps me in shape. Most important, I have to do something or I will go crazy lol. That said I wouldn't mind contracting out smaller components. But so far, other than the allure of working someplace exotic, the costs may not be adding up to enough of an advantage to offset the risks.

I have some friends in Croatia that are checking with their friends that own a boatyard. If I build there I have a free house to stay in and labor will run me $1000 per month. I like Croatia, village life, great looking women, food is awesome!!
