Carb CFM

Hey Oliver,

What carbs are on those old girls? I'm running 800 Hollys on my original 454s with LS6 heads. I can't do 50 like Steve but I'm easily into the 40s.

"Rams working well for arnesons so got on plane a few times for short bursts but it requires WOT with these weak 330HP 454s and one carb never seemed to kick into into the secondaries so it lagged way behind on rpms, need to look into that. Would love to replace both carbs with a fresh set of bigger CFMs - ones that I know are healthy and set up close to what I need....or go the way Steve did with EFI setup but cash poor for a while longer as wedding bills are still being taken care of."

 

Spare Props

Any got any ideas where I could pick up a spare set to props?

2" shaft. 25 spline. The closer to 23x36p the better.

Having some trouble finding anything close.

 

hello Ron. quadrajets stock units on merc 330 454.

 

There is a bunch of power in the heads, CAM, intake and carb but I do no twant to re-use the units I have. I am thinking of having a pair of 496s built with a bit more compression, a decent CAM and one of the newer all in on e EFI/Carb units. Then do a swap out in the winter.

 

Hey pizza which genny did you with last year? Still happy with it?

 

I put in a 3.5 KW by Next-Gen. It is a 7hp 1 cylinder Kubota diesel. I only have bout 50 hours (or less) But yes still like it-trouble free so far and sooo quiet.

That looks sweet - it drives your A/C, stove top and microwave concurrently?

My westerbeke 6.5 flaked out. Pulled it (that was an experience BTW as it weighs 400-plus pounds) - I dropped it off to a well known Westerbeke rebuilder here locally and he has ha health issues galore last 3 months.... trying to be nice understanding guy but getting ridiculous. Cant ever seem to find good reliable boat people in S. FL and this is the boating capital of the world???? Bitching aside - what did that thing set you back?

 

and when are you installing my bow thruster and finding me some decent diesels like yours to install ;-)

 

HI Everyone!

I just got back from two weeks in the San Juan Islands. We had a great time putting a little over five hundred miles on the boat during that time. Everything worked great including truck and trailer after the five hour trip to Anacortes each way. I'm ready to go back, but I have to lose the five pounds I gained from eating too much crab LOL.
Lets get an update on all the Harley projects out there, and any fun trips we have taken our Harleys on this year.

Hey Sharper, If I drive mine across lake Okee will you put in a bow thruster for me? I can't get Lee to do it for me and he is too far north anyway

I've playing with props again! I know, it's a sickness. I found a set of used 4 blade stainless Rollas, gaining a few miles on hour on the top. And the best part, is how quiet they are.

Pros:
Higher cruise speed
Higher top speed
More efficient, When lightly loaded I'm touching 1.3 mpg. I believe we are approaching diesel economy? What do you say Pizza?
Quiet! No need to upgrade stereo. LOL

Cons:
Very little bow lift, wants to bow steer some at speeds over 41 or 42 MPH.
Slow getting on plain
Razor sharp! I don't want swimmers any where near them.

I have not run in big water yet, so the jury's still out.

 

NICE! I have the opposite problem. My 454s dont have the b@lls to get her running right with the two sets of props I have. I also had a shaft nut get loose and may have stripped out the splines on one prop ...slips now. I think I am going to have to drop $$$$s to get that fixed and take at least 2 inches out of the pitch while I am at it. I'm thinking 18 or 19 might be better for my setup (1.5 gears, stock 454s).

 

Surface drives are easy to maintain, very straight forward...2 back to back thrust bearings and a need bearing.

With a 2 speed gear box, full trim tabs, acceleration is fine and top speed it excellent. With a 2 speed gear, an undersized propeller can be used (18.25 x 25) in my case...


But.....maneuvering is very challenging.....I lost my large rear deck cushion and I could not back up to it as the wash off the transom kept pushing it away.

 

Anyone know anything about a new rebuild of a 42 Harley? I think it is in maryland. The company I work for might be getting contracted for the interior, only reason I heard about it. Supposed to be entirely wheelchair accessible and a $2M price tag. ??
