This month Professional Boatbuilder magazine published my article on the Pacific Rowboat, called: Design Brief: Ocean Rowboat. It gives the concise story of this design, and I am uploading here a PDF copy. Jacob has been flying for the last few months to earn some more money for the project and to start filming a documentary, and now he is back at Schooner Creek Boatworks for a month or so to carry on with the construction.

Here are the latest pictures of Jacob Hendrickson's Pacific Rowboat. Jacob is shown cutting bulkheads, and Peter Thomsen is bonding them in place.

Other news: Jacob has hired a film producer, Dave Unitan, to begin making a promo video for fund raising, plus a documentary movie on the whole trans-Pacific effort. Dave will include some animations of the boat in the ocean in these films.

Here are some continuing photographs of Jacob Hendrickson's Pacific rowboat. Jacob has been at Schooner Creek Boatworks helping out (and paying money) for a month or two, and he's now back in Afghanistan flying for a few months. These show the making of the internal deck. See the next few entries for other photos of the hull and deck structures.

Here are some photos of making the internal structure. Note the tabbing in of the rudder stock tube, pre-making of the inner flanges for the internal deck, and gluing those into place. See the next entry for making the deck.

Here is the outside deck structure going together. The builders decided to make it all in one piece instead of three pieces.

It's turning into a real battle cruiser. Can't wait to see how it performs!

Presumably the lid is well insulated against the tropical sun, otherwise it would be an oven !

My client and prospective ocean rower Jacob Hendrickson has completed a new blog entry on his website, you can read it here: http://www.jacobadoram.com/blog/.

Also, he has posted build photos from Schooner Creek Boatworks. You may have seen most of them on this thread, but at the end of the list are a few new ones of the cabin top. The cabin is now being glued to the hull. Photos are here: http://www.jacobadoram.com/thebuild.

Despite his budget constraints the rowboat is coming along nicely. Boy that's going to be a long trip across the Pacific. I'll definitely follow his progress.

Swell job on the boat design Eric! I like it!

Here are some more construction photos of the cabin top and assemblyh. Note in the last two pictures, builder Steve Rander is standing in the well in the cockpit in way of the cockpit hatch, and then he is shown again in the well in the main forward cabin in way of the bubble top.

Well, it has been awhile since I have been able to post any news about the Pacific Rowboat. Part of that is because I spent the last 3 months of 2016 selling off just about everything I own that is not related to our sailboat--house, furniture, cars, loads of STUFF. Arliss and I finally moved onto Corroboree on 30 December, and we left St. Augustine for good on 4 January. We sailed to Miami, then to Bimini in the Bahamas, cruised down through the islands, shot by the Turks and Caicos without really stopping, had a wonderful week in the Dominican Republic, and then had an unbelievably easy sail of 51 hours on a single tack for 230 miles through the Mona Passage to Puerto Rico. Sailing along the south coast of PR, we are now in Fajardo, PR, at Puerto Del Rey Marina, having our 3-cylinder Yanmar diesel engine rebuilt. Long story--it was burning a lot of oil, so it needs to be bored for new sleeves, then fitted with new pistons, valves, injectors, and mounts. We'll be here a few weeks yet, then it's off to the other islands in the Caribbean.

But this post is not about me, it's about the Pacific Rowboat. I had not heard from Jacob Hendrickson in a while, but we connected this week, and here is the latest news and photos. Jacob has been continuing the construction at Schooner Creek Boat Works in between corporate flying gigs in Afghanistan. The voyage has been delayed another year, but launching is imminent. Here is Jacob's email for the best description:

"It'll be another 1 year delay, I just couldn't quite pull the funds together with a safe enough margin. However, the boat is coming along nicely. I just left Portland about a week ago. When I left, I was happy with the progress. As I was leaving, the interior hatches were just about done and the interior was getting its second coat of paint. We were finishing up details like the backing plates and fittings for the U-Bolts, drilling out pathways for the wiring, and some final interior tabbing for the electrical panel.

"Basically all that's left is finishing the plumbing, ventilation, installing the electronics, and attaching the rub rails. When I get back in Aug-Sep, we'll have our first opportunity to put the boat in the water and get the stability tests done as you prescribed. From there I'll see about fitting the canvas shelving and exterior canvass protection. I'm also considering installing a carbon fiber racecar seat in the forward cabin near the footwell with a five point harness, for obvious reasons. Pete has some ideas on how that might work. The opening hardtop turned out pretty great thanks to Pete as well.

"Once we get the stability testing done, I'll start getting my gear situated for things like deployment of the sea anchor/drogue, etc. I've also made some good progress with the nutritionist out of Oregon State. The students that took on the project have done a great job and managed to get the required sustenance down to just over 1000 lbs. They even offered to help me shop, package, and pack the food stores. Even though I'm delayed again, I think it's probably for the best since I'm gone so much. It also gives me more time to try and find sponsors and a production company to back the filmmaker making the documentary. I've got a few leads, but so far not much has panned out in that department."

Here are some photos--the boat is looking really good!

By the way, the Pacific Rowboat was on display at the Portland Boat Show in January, and it was featured in a news story by the local NBC affiliate, KGW8. Jacob posted some videos of the news report on his Facebook page, and I provide links to those stories here, two versions:

57th Annual Portland Boat Show at Expo Center http://www.kgw.com/entertainment/television/programs/sunrise/57th-annual-portland-boat-show-at-expo-center/385786203

This second version is as shown on Jacob's Facebook page as I don't have a separate link for it. Scroll down to the first video: Jacob Adoram https://www.facebook.com/jacobadoram

    This is really cool!
