85 Ski Supreme Sierra bowrider

It's boating season!

I like my Sierra Supreme (thus my screen name), and like to browse the net for new info. Running across this old post revived my interest, and I felt like a current question deserves a current answer. Just glad they don't delete old posts about old boats that are still kicking up wakes. Hope my input has helped someone down the same path that I've enjoyed with this boat for the past 14 years.

 

Hoping some of you can answer my question still.

I'm looking at a 1988 Sierra supreme that at least from the looks of it is immaculate. Has low hours > 300.... But the seller wants 9000 for it. I am having a hard time stomaching that price on a near 30 year old boat.

However... with the hull design and direct drive it's a nice mix between the shallow ski boats and a typical runabout. Typical use would be skiing and tubing and just hanging on the lake. IDK.... I really really like the boat.... Just not the price....

So I guess what I'm asking is.... Is this boat worth that much? Or even if I can get them down a little?

I'm not sure what your experence with boats is, but are you sure you want this style of boat? This type of boat does only one thing well, which is tow skiers, this is a tournament style ski boat. It doesn't turn very well, it has a lot of fixed draft, so forget about getting close to shore, it's slow speed handling sucks and the price seems out of line, etc. Looking up the average retail value on this boat is simple enough and I'd suggest it's at least twice the current market value at that price. Pull up the NADA price for the exact model and year on this boat and see how it fairs.

 

I'll be honest I'm fairly new to owning a boat but I've been around them for a while. My brother-in-law had an mb sports ski boat and we loved going out on it and water skiing, so I have been around and driven a direct drive boat so I do understand the complications with slow speeds, reverse, and turning radius. We would mostly be skiing or tubing or tied up to a floating dock or my parents pontoon boat.

I hear you on the price but I've looked around at the used market in my area and amazingly it seems in line with others.... There are a few that are slightly newer but don't seem to be in as good of condition and are closed bow.....

 

I'd be inclined to look for an outdrive or outboard equipped boat, instead of the straight shaft setup. Everything about them is better and you'll have a lot more choices to select from too. Resale when this time comes will also be much better. Simply put, look around, it's a buyers market and huge deals can be made, to get the other half off their back, about having use of HER carport again. FWIW, there's that exact model not far from me, for $3k, in good condition. Hell, you could drop another $3k into it (upgrades, maintenance, repairs, etc.) and have a perfect example of this boat, while saving $3k in the process.
