    A friend told me just yesterday that the Wall Street Journal had made reference to a Flywheel energy storage system was being worked on by a Japanese power company.

    Perhaps you might want to visit the Detroit Diesel site and view the damage WMO causes.

    Damned if I know but this poster claimed energy savings by burning old oil, and I thought it might be wise to inform him of what OEM engine mfg think of the idea.

    "Ya but by pursuing odd ball ideas some folks have come up with some pretty interesting stuff. I'm running WMO ( waste motor oil ) in my diesel and its running smoother quieter and stronger than ever. Turns out the stuff has about 20% higher BTU's/gallon than diesel and about 30% more than WVO ( vegetable oil ). Funny thing was no one in the bio-diesel field was going to mention it cause its not "green" fuel. Well its fuel its free its recycling and its like adding a turbo charger to my engine. So I'm setting up a 160 gallon filter station in my back yard even as we speak ( three 55 gallon drums with multiple filters cleaning it down to ~0.5 microns ). Should be up and running by the end of Jan and a few days after that I'll have a 3 month supply of fuel set aside and ready to go."

    The modern flywheel is no longer a carbon epoxy disc in a vacuum can at 200,000 RPM , its a capacitor that can absorb all the breaking effort and re apply it to the drive train a few seconds later.

    On a boat app the flywheel might be built in the stability system with solar or wind keeping it to speed if used as a house power batt.

    At least the unit wont die when flat , as Lead batts do.

    A flywheel powered reefer would be a great advance ,

    One of the downsides of flywheels is that they take a long time to spool up from stopped. It is almost like starting a steam engine. You don't just show up and go boating.

    is there an energy gain if you can get the flywheel to move weight out after its spinning?

    Wow, I found myself again,...via google.

    I had forgotten about this subject thread I started a number of years ago,..then a friend brought up this subject of energy storage recently,

    I was never that 'hot' on the idea of hydrogen storage. It cost too much energy to make hydrogen,...and I remember Germany's problem with it when they couldn't get helium from us for their airships.

    It made me think back to this older idea of mechanical energy storage,...maybe still viable for ground based power plants

    Hi ,
    i have worked at Magnet Motor GmbH on flywheel. The smaller recuperate break energy in busses and deliver power for acceleration and as we test run the flywheel in the Switzerland Trolybus in Basel the bus was able to drive for over 5 km distance without the trolly cable. So it is much easy to need no cable switch as the cable can end befor a crossing and run on long after the crossing. The samller had 2 megawatt energy and the biggest for military use had 8 Megawatt, this one rotate with up to 18000 rpm and waight about 2000 kg . Outer surface speed was Mach 2 . And yes a flywheel is a short time power absorber.Cappasitor do the same but are currently less powerfull.For longer powerdelivering a fuelcell will be the right system.Our flywheel in busses doing only 12ooo rpm for saefty reson. For overload test we use a old mine , deep deep inside the mine where such monster can not destroy to much.

    Your being of German nationality, this OLD though of mine might entertain you,

    My interest in the 300 Gullwing Mercedes stretches back MANY years...almost bought a wonderful original back in the 70's, but didn't have a place to keep it at the time,...and was too much on-the-run around the world at the time.

    In the mid/late 90's worked out of Singapore and was thinking of trying to get involved in alternative-fueled vehicle development in SE Asia. More particular I was very interested in that Chrysler project to put a flywheel-powered car into the Le Mans race.

    One of my thoughts at that time was if you really wanted to promote this alternative-fuel tech here in SE Asia, why not put such a power plant into a replica 300 Gullwing,....particularly since the highest per-capta ownership of MB in the world is in Singapore. It sure would get a lot of attention.

    Later in the 2010 era I was now living part time in Thailand and the thought of a replica 300 Gullwing had re-entered my mind again. I know of a few fiberglass boatbuilder here that could produce the bodies. Just wondering about what sort of list for the most difficult parts are to get for a kit gullwing project??...I know i have heard fiberglass is one, but I'm betting that with all of the huge amount of car building here in Thailand, that somewhere it could be built right here? The 7 biggest capital companies in Thailand at the time were auto related. Thailand is truly auto crazy.

    Promote an advanced electric car development program for SE Asia (and maybe the world) based out of Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore, with experiments carried out in a Gullwing looking vehicle.
