Interesting Tiny Tri

After the poor reception Tiny Tri received, quite unfairly in my view, I post his new design and hope people can see the good in her. She is rather nice, very light and easy to build. Very neat reefing too.

Thank you Brian for your posting and the links. It is again a very interesting design of creative "ikarus" Bernd Kohler.
Small trimarans with ski-like planing floats are rare birds and when these floats shall be only to balance the main hull, there is hardly a precedessor to compare with.
But I´ve found one to understand the new concept of Bernd a bit better.



Samba is not a conventional trimaran, but it claims to be a narrow skiff with wide hiking wings, to keep both floats completely out of the water to minimize skinfriction and wave/form resistance. Peter L.Thompson of Thompson Designs (Canada) has created this little boat and you can find the article in Multihull International May 1994. I think the concept of TINY TRI is worth to be discussed.

Found another one - but not shure about the concept. http://fionamsinclair.co.uk/yachts/smith/page25.htm . The floats are from a split surfboard, one of the big old ones (4 meter).

 

I wonder if Bernd Kohler will come out with a small cruiser trimaran for one or two(?) sailors where is it possible to sleep in the main hull. He has some experience with small catamarans (Jigsaw).
Channing Boswell has built such a fascinating small trimaran with some interesting features:

May be floating a bit higher would make her faster.

 

Like this Shuttleworth 26ft Catamaran the main hull of a small trimaran can have a "nacelle" to allow more space for more comfort if it is kept light enough.

 

Just getting back to Bernd Kohler's designs, and talking about a small cruiser trimaran: yes he does have such a boat on the horizon. No plans available to date.
