CSC 30 Catamaran- the coastal passage

    I would not have said "Don't have a plywood boat for cruising" unless you took my words out of context. I might have said "don't use cheap ply" or "I wouldn't do it myself". Having said that I write this at anchor on my 28ft cruising cat which is ply/epoxy

    My 30ft Windsong and 28ft Gypsy built in plywood have made Atlantic and Pacific crossings. I cruised on a plywood Romany for several years

    It had me quite stumped that anyone would make such a claim since you've explained the benefits of building in ply and have done so many times.

    Besides, many many moons ago I simply liked the looks of Catamarans. It reading your articles as well as a few other designers made me understand them and ultimately purchase one. Some day I hope to build one too.

    So yeah, I owe you even though wouldn't know how much influence you've had in my decision making unless I told you. You've now been told.
    Thank you for all your articles and spending so much time with the sailing community for which we all know, you don't get paid to do.

    Its not that I have anything personal against Richard in the CSC 30 he goes on about west system no being a viable option for ocean going boats. Also that the CSC 30 which was built by a boat builder with over 20 years of skiil was crap. We finished a CSC 30 5yrs ago thats veen sailing the pacific and Atlamtic for that long with no issues. Wd stidfened the boat up and used double bulkheads with boxed cross beams but stuck with dimensions.
    Then I think well Ill get A Wood design and make one for myself for world cruising and find the hes stated above although he said ply glass not specifically west system. Yet endorsed it on his cruises. So I just feel if your going to run someone down with 20yr build and sales history whos stated that the plans are basic yet if you are aware of weakness's is an ideal skeleton to get you going. Then I couldnt in good conscience buy his plans.
    I am fully aware of his greatness as have sailed many of his designs. But youll have to find his post on page on or two of the CSC 30 posts.
    And to your kind offer I am currently making a model of a cat using the CSC 30 with some modifications. The one we build used the hull design from the csc with extra full bulkheads box design beams and double bulkheads at beams.
    As I am not a naval architect and just a carpenter that happens to assist in building boats with a boat builder using plans, all be it with the CSC 30 very basic could you let me know if I did take you up on the offer what Id neex to send you. As I would like to change the coach house and have found a few vague ideas to the height of floor re slaping seems it around 650mm to 800mm on a 30ft approx dependent on who you ask.
    Anyway bla bla. Again I know of Richards skill and his boats I was thrown when reading his comment becuase the guy who drew up the plans has been building a long time and after not believing it his design turned out really well and as said is still out there somewhere and will be for many years.

    Sorry mate. I don't know many people who would modify another persons design and I'm not one to do so either, besides, I'm not qualified to do that job. You'd want to contact the original designer of the boat for modifications.

    I can tell you that it's a catamaran and it will slap. It's just what conditions the seas will be before it starts will vary from design to design.
    As you go higher you'll get less slap but you also make it less stable. The center of gravity goes up, buoyancy will remain about the same so your static and dynamic stability will go down.
    Depending on how much the boat had to start with will determine how far you want to go.

    I dont think Ive worked for a boat builder that hasnt modified the plans of a boat hes build before? But anyway I have attached the drawn up very basic plans that were close to the CSC 30 we built except as said used double bulkheads where beams where place. I have got a few sheets from here about height of cabin and all seem to generally state 650 to 850 mm above sheer for minimal slapage if thats a thing. I do love the boat we turned out wish I had pics shes a lovely forgiving vessel from all indercations thats been giving better performance then was thought she would hence the desire to build one for myself. Im very lucky in the fact that a mates company makes marine ply hardwood and radial pine both AA bond. Its just the resin thats so so expensive but theres no use building with ply if you dont seal it with resin. That said I do know of a boat that was built in the 90s with glass over ply without expoxy on wood first. And he used general varnish on inside thats still sailing strong. But I m guessing boats have been built for 1000s of years and the lasted alot longer in the past then they do now But Im still amazed that this boat at 40ft is still going strong and I dont know how.
    Anyway if you have time and could loom over this and give me any feed back itd be great. Im thinking if you joined the cabin to the hulls running bow to aft it would help with structural integrity rather then just hang it from the beams. Or is my theory floored. Id love to find someone with some interest all be it via a forum that may have constructive input.
    RE Richard I may have miss read of misunderstood hos comments so will place my appology here in the hope he reads it. If you can't admit your mistakes you can't grow and all that. And as stated hes done some great boats that Ive enjoyed sail.

    CSC30 a lite modified today (hobbye), same simple construction method. but not finished.
    For saiboat or only motor boat.(transom need 12º)
    deck clearance: 56cm aprox.
    mast: 11 meters.

    Thats fantastic. Did you draw this up with the dimensions? Quick question though you say Transom needs 12° in regards to? But regardless if you did these then great work and if you got them then thats so great work and many thanks.

    Cheers Yan has slapped me about re above. And did post apology. And as stated somewhere u have enjoy many hours on some of your designs as crew. But I extend the apology to you.
    Now to the boat stuff. Is mixed hardwood what you mean as not cheap. Or is A grade marine pine fine to use. Although Ive only used hardwood while working with boat builder who are being paid buy clients with deep pockets. After thinking about it and seeing cats being built with the pine west system if its glassed properly marine grade pine pky would work, or am I missing something
    I was thinking use hardwood for below water line and pine above but only if suitable. I would like thoughts on all pine also.
    And looking at many many builds on youtube it seems that this kind of build is now very common now (not this design the build method). Any reason anyone can think of.
    And Yams been great so Has isladelobos who after posting the plans that were drawn up has post some drawings that are most helpful. As I came outa the blocks a little fast.

    Sorry my English.

    Yes i can put the dimmensions and some draws for cnc cut, but need time to finish.

    The transom 12º is the outboard manufacturer, inclination required for the motor mount.(normally 12º).
    For a Sailboat, the transom is best 0º to install the rudder, but it can be done with 12º.
    Another way is make an adaptor from 0º to 12º or put the rudder on the lower hull.

    Thanks for clarification on engine mount. And this is all great stuff. Ill I'll be much happier the more information I have. I do realise the plans I sent for the CSC 30 were sparce to say the least but it looks like I came across a great resource. Im happy to put in as many bulkheads as would make her safe and the cabin design you sketched up looks great.
    If theres anything I can possibly do just let me know. It sounds as if English isnt your first language so I can not really offer my building services to you for free. But anyway I can assist.
