They have proposed to replace the original engines at least 3 times during my 30 years in aerospace.

By this time they would have saved enough gas to have more than paid for the initial change and they would have had more power, and no heavy smoke.
If I remember right the engines would have weighed less - more range again.

Additionally the maintenence would have been much cheaper.

I was a crew member on a G model for a couple of years. There still isn't much fancy equipment on a B-52. They are primarily long ranged weapon carriers. Since strategic weapons are so smart and long ranged today, there isn't a big need for advanced capability on the carrier. Other than a few special targets that the B-2 can strike.
All that is needed is a weapons delivery platform that can reach the appropriate cruise missile release point.
However, now that a few countries around the world are developing longer ranged interceptors, a new platform is probably needed soon.

Imagine how much money is used to prepare weapon's for a nuclear war and then imagine how that money could solve earths children from starvation several times over.

    Penny wise, Billion dollar foolish.

Yep, pretty much sounds like "Congress".

Aside: I really wish I'd bought stock in International Paper back when folks were first really touting the paperless office. If only I'd known that "paperless" actually meant more paper!

No need to imagine. It wouldn't feed very many people since the bad guys would move in and kill most people, and enslave and starve the rest.
That's been mankind's history for pretty much forever.

Starvation leads to bad guys or so you call it as in climate change war in Syria, or bad guys profiting from war "nuclear weapons development" that will starve what's left of humans on earth when the nuclear war strikes, which can be any moment of any day.
I am surprised a nuclear war has not already been triggered, but mean time the $ spent on war is causing famine and misery.

    Quotes
“Give me the money that has been spent in war and I will clothe every man, woman, and child in an attire of which kings and queens will be proud. I will build a schoolhouse in every valley over the whole earth. I will crown every hillside with a place of worship consecrated to peace.”

War is caused by thugs coming in and trying to take the fruits of one's labors.
The chaos resulting from said war causes fields to lie fallow, starvation and general carnage. Stay on your side of the fence and tend your garden. Cow poop will help your crops grow. That is how you prevent war. Also, don't violate my water rights.

Prior to this attack, most Americans had an isolationist mindset, wanting to be left unmolested to mind their own business.

But, what causes people to post random pictures about boats and boating in a thread dedicated to this and this alone?

I would say it is a mystery, but it is really about fanatics beating pots together and trying to get noticed.
