Torqeedo

Folks I am in a bit of a spot here.
I really like the Torqeedo Travel 1003L (long shaft)

But the two so called "agents" that they have in south Africa
are
pathetic useless braindead cremated monkeys vermin and and and and
if I could use the real words that is going on in my head I would be banned forever, that's why I am speaking politely.

The response from Torqeedo Head Office, I am still waiting for, but maybe they are on holiday or something, not German efficiency as I got to know it.

Anyway the Torqeedo is a very nice piece of kit
question
is there anything else, anywhere in the world, that comes close or could be used as a substitute
keep in mind salt water use and it must be able to work reasonably hard

any idea or input will be appreciated

and run it thru a 12v to 36v stepup transformer ???

 

Trolling motors

Hi Manie

That looks like a better buy than the Torquedo and maybe they would be better to deal with. I would also google Minn Kota trolling motors. They make salt water motors with thrusts up to 112 lbs. I dont think you can step up 12 volt to 36 volt with just a transformer because this would be DC current from a battery and would have to be converted to AC to use just a transformer and then converted back to DC for the motor. There maybe other ways of doing this though also doing this would cut the run time you could get to 1/3 or less. If you can find enough space and handle the extra weight it would be much better to have 3 12 V batteries wired in series.

Cape Town Sailors

calling all Cape Town Sailors

I need a bit of help and assistance here:

which yacht club would you recommend for the TEN in the Cape area
anywhere from Saldanha to Gordons Bay and in between
I really like Houtbay but I don't know if they have the stomach for this project

Lets please just keep the facts in mind
I built this boat to have a bit of fun and I have no desire to endanger anybody's life
the plan is to get to know the boat well and to spend as much time as possible on the boat
the idea is to spend 2 weeks down there and then 2 weeks back in Pretoria every month from February onwards

I just felt that the best way is to join a yacht club
and do the ZA registration, COF and buoyancy certification under their guidance and supervision, this way we keep everybody happy
AND we play by the book of rules and regulations
I am not asking for any special favours or freebee's

It would be nice to be on a walk on mooring when I'm down there and shower at the clubhouse, and when I go back to Pretoria the boat can go back on it's trailer and be out of the way. I will arrange for safe parking off site.

I will appreciate any advice - guidance - and assistance that I can get.

 

why would HBYC not have the stomach?

Eh Manie, Just tell them you'll try not to draw too much attention to their club... in case they have some illegal activities... you know, skinny dipping without SAMSA approved life jackets... those Cape Tonians (ek se) are weird I mean, it's such a small boat, who will notice ? and you won't even use their water, you'll bring your own, if you can find some. I'll donate the first bucket.

(OK I said bucket, not bucket with water).

 

I just tried to phone a friend to find out how the water level in their dam (lake) is. Blimey, he says to me he's just busy with someone he'll call me back. She must be really good looking for not wanting to talk to ME right away The problem with sailing off late is the dust clouds.

Which reminds me Manie, come back home with water in the boat, ok. I can see a new trend here, you go down with an empty boat and come back with it full. I wonder if they are going to make new laws on that too. I'm surprised they don't tax on the sq meter of the boat in the water yet. Maybe it's an oversight, I'll call and ask them.

Which makes me think you want to make the trip just before the poles reverse so you can end up where you started.
Well it will save a lot of time.

 

Every now and then there's a reversal of the earth's magnetic field such that the positions of magnetic north and magnetic south are interchanged. Last time this occurred was approx 781,000 years ago with a brief complete reversal in between then and now, the average meantime is about 450,000 years. So the next one could start just after Manie's departure, if so we we'll never know where his compass will bring him as we don't know how long this new reversal will take, or maybe he just ends up in one of those geomagnetic excursions . .
