Separating an outboard from its tilt mount...

    Hello both,

    thanks for your advice - I see the problem with using a die - I was hoping that cleaning as much of thread as I could we be good enough.

    I've never come across thread-files before - clever bits of kit! I'd still have to know what pitch the thread is, though... By the sounds of it, I'll definitely be administering a good dose of loctite to it in the end, as well :)

    The thread on most American made outboards is 7/8 14 TPI as most all fit the same steering cable. This would be 22 mm. You can measure across the end of the tube with a ruler to check this. 7/8" 14 TPI is the common thread for a 7/8" fine thread US bolt so a threading die would be easy to find in the US but probably not in Scotland. If you do get a die run it onto the thread in the normal direction and then if you need to turn the die over run it on again to clean up the threads close to the retaining nut.

    Tack weld the nuts to the tube and run a die over the cable mount section . Jobs done and it won't come loose again. Have done that on jonno 115 and it worked fine. You can put a piece of sandpaper on a small dowel to clean the tube bore so the cable is free. Its really not that hard to replace the tube but what said above takes 5 minutes and lasts forever.

    Hello all,

    thanks again for your help with this - quite a few options to consider now, thanks :)

    I can get a 7/16 UNF nut here in the Highlands, so I think that might be the way to go, to check the fit. I've been looking for "thread chasing" nuts and keep finding dies, which are fairly pricey at that size...

    if you cant find a part numer for the nut... have them look for the flywheel nut on top of crankshat... its the same .. i cant recall the size and pitch at tis time.. but i do recall it being the same

    The nut should be 7/8" not 7/16"

    Hello,

    I thought an update was due on this job - sorry if this counts as resurrecting an old thread...

    I got hold of a 7/8 die-nut and reconditioned the thread on the pivot tube, drilled all the rust out from the inside with a very long 16mm drill bit, covered my steering rod with white grease and it went through & screwed on perfectly.

    My next question is, does anybody know where, in the UK, I can get one of these? Postage to the UK from the US is almost as much as the thing itself...

    Any help would be much appreciated,
