efficient 10m displacement powercat (build thread)

I've been busy fairing.... The weather has been pretty crappy this past 2 months with a lot of rain so it makes things difficult working outside in a quagmire... I took this snap whilst it was still wet after sanding the high build and hosing off the stb side which finally gave me an idea of what the gloss might look like... I think it's close enough to gloss coat now save the odd blemish which a little glaze putty will fix...

Same sort of progress has been happening inside the saloon and cockpit getting things ready to paint... this stuff is very time consuming ive discovered!

 

yeah... couple of more months she should be good to go...

sprayed the stb side with 2 pack today, came out alright for my first full unassisted spray job got a couple of runs tho, 1 near the chine of the topsides and a couple more in the cockpit, ah well...

Next up will be finishing the cockpit and then painting the saloon and cockpit in 1 hit to minimize masking up for overspray. Then it will be straight onto the front windscreen and rear saloon windows. Not far behind that will be cutting in the hatches and portlights which have been patiently waiting for me in the shed... Should be some reasonably quick visual progress over the next couple of months as everything falls into place...

Painted the cockpit today... Took a little bit of planning to work this one out. You see, i wanted to put some matting agent into the 2k and only do the ceiling and rear cabin wall in it as i knew they werent perfectly fair and could not be bothered otherwise. So i mixed up the first batch of paint with the matting agent and painted those areas first, then directly wiped down the non painted surfaces with solvent which collected a bit of overspray. Directly after that, i mixed a new batch of straight gloss paint and did the rest...

Results are pretty good, i think im getting better with practice I Needed to hold the gun a little closer, move faster, a bit less paint, and not so much orange peel this time...

I may even get to shoot the port sides tomorro as the weather looks good for outdoors painting

 

Thats looking damn good. Nice roof deck, will there be a flybridge? How is the motor/s going to be positioned center, sides

No fly bridge mate, I could but I won't, more weight and windage which wasn't part of the original design that was biased towards fuel efficiency at high speeds. The extra weight and windage would slow me down and increase the fuel burn so... Plus I don't fish for marlin, so that type of game fishing is not what I need it to do...

The outboards are to be mounted on the transom of each hull. Speaking of which, looks like I just found them today, will be organising to have a look at them this week - a pair of 115hp suzukis...

 

Yes sir my boat is doing amazing, quite a few people have expressed interest in having one, they can't understand how it flies across 3" deep flats lol. Very comfy to fish on as well, not tippy at all. ))

I ended up trading out the 70 for a 115. 2 of them on yours ought to be great, they really sip the fuel. Well that deck will serve you well for sunbathing when the fish aren't biting!

Can't wait to see your finished boat and how it performs. I agree with the whole idea of good design and less power. Over here we keep upping the size of motors, I don't get it lol!!

A boat your size would probably have 3 300's on it, we are out of control in this country!!!
I'd like to build an ocean going cat like yours next. I can't venture very off shore with this flat bottom.

 

So i ended up shooting the other side of the boat today, all went well, another few pics tells the story - the bloke in the photo is my old man, he was spotting for me as i painted in case i left a dry spot ;

Have been busy sanding and fairing out all the tape joins in the interior hull spaces, theres not much to show so i havnt bothered taking any pics but perhaps i should to illustrate the PITA factor.... i hope to start painting in there next week.

In the mean time, the outboard motors (twin suzuki DF115`s) arrived today so im pretty chuffed at that, with it came all the hydraulic steering components and rigging etc...

The dollar ssems to be tanking so i went on a bit of a shopping spree, got all my solar system and associated components purchased, the battery bank is purchased and lying in wait, Ive also got the front windshield ready to install, so ill get onto that this week also...

Im gunning for a pre christmas launch date - cant see much stopping me at this point

 

can't wait to hear how she performs with that power!
