Just found the video of the Balmoral incident while leaving La Coruna . . . .

I seem to remember Jean Pierre Dick sheltering in La Corunna in the last Vendee, prior to crossing the bay.....

Obviously he waited for more clement conditions - withouut a keel.....

 

After losing the keel Jean-Pierre Dick luckily could stabilise the floundering boat by filling the ballast tanks with water and continue, but a lot slower of course, and only relatively safe and manageable in downwind conditions I guess, the keel and mast walker* Alex Thomson profited from this and took Jean-Pierre's third place, I believe.

A tragedy was avoided by a hair when Reef McIntosh had lost control of the jet ski which had just launched a Raimana Van Bastolear archi hollow wave on the deadly wave of Teahupoo in Tahiti.

The jet left with the lip of the wave, grazed the head of the Tahitian surfer - who had the instinct to bow their heads - before being swallowed up in a monstrous tube.

Numberable years ago I told my circuits lab assistant that we couldn't complete the experiment because some of our resistors had lost their magic blue smoke.
