Well I hope your week off boating went great! And your boat turned out fabulous by the way! Very nice work. I was going to hold off on mine for a couple weeks now. Their is an antique boat show near my folks cabin. I thought about running it up there to pick the brains of some experts.

So I never did check this in time..... and missed the Ebay listing. Ugh! My bad, Let me know if you come across some again. I am going to try to stay on top of it as well. I just can never seam to find anything when I look. Maybe the key words I use aren't right.

    57? Delta Lefty

Anyone know anything about the rare Delta Lefty (left side steer) they custom built in the late 50's? I believe mine is a 57 ordered by someone (no name) from the "Town of Burlington" (unsure what state) received in 1958. It has Johnson controls and a Johnson 12 volt electric start system I saved this boat from demolition and sitting right next to it was a 1955 25hp Johnson, not sure if this was the motor off of this boat or just a coincidence? From what I've learned, they only made about 5-10 lefty's each year. Any info or suggestions would be great. Ill post a few pics when I figure out how.

If you had been there last weekend, the Rocky Mountain Classics (local ACBS chapter) was at Grand Lake with twenty beautiful wooden boats. The weather was perfect. We would have loved to have you join us. Next weekend, August 8, the club will be boating at Frisco.

    Delta history

Hello all, I've just stumbled onto this forum/thread hence the very late input to the Delta boats topic. If you are not familiar with it, there is a very good vintage boat compilation/directory done by a Midwestern fellow by the name of Bob Speltz. He spent much of his life gathering information on vintage small to medium sized boats and prepared and published a series of seven books called "The Real Runabouts". It is still available via the ACBS ships store. In volume 4, the "Outboard Edition", on pages 120 thru 124, there is a chapter on Delta Boats. Lots of info here.
As most of you have figured out, Delta Boat first appeared on the scene in 1948. In 1949 their first black and white, four page brochure was issued describing six models offered for that year. There is a chart showing the particulars for those. Boats in that chart along with some pix were 12',12.5',and 14.5'. The boats of this period were cold molded construction done in-house with a combination of fir, birch and mahogany veneers bonded with Weldwood resorcinol glue. White oak transoms, knees and stringers were installed after the hulls came off the moulding plug. Later in the mid fifties and the early 60's the hulls were molded by US Molded Shapes Inc. of Grand Rapids ,Michigan.
The severe economic conditions of 1963 and 1964 put the company down.
Delta produced some of the sleekest and most advanced designs of outboard runabouts that was possible to do in wood construction. They also offered a big list of custom options, including paint, trim, hardware, seating,
deck layouts, flooring material etc., etc.. They also offered complete kit boats and I think that via these, some left hand configurations were built.
Looking closer, I see that some "lefty" models were offered thru the middle 50's - among them a 1956,15', "Sassy".
An interesting sidelight here is that a model that is being called the "Sexy",
is actually named the "Sassy" shown in a 1962 colored brochure at 15' and 16.5'.
Anyway, there is a LOT more info here in Speltz's chapter and if anyone wants confirmation of your particular boat, maybe it can be gleaned from here in the Real Runabouts. There is no hull number info though.
    Cheers!!
    Paul

Thanks Paul! As time goes by the information will only grow greater! 1960-61 was the last years of the Sexy. Delta's last few years grew desperate and had very few boats but lots of options.
