Actually, much of the normally well-soaked western side of the Cascades has been declared in drought by Washington State's Governor. This is from the Washington State Department of Ecology, not an anti-climate change website directly supported by the far-right Heartland Institute.

I see this happening around me, and I actually live here and have for nearly 50-years, including growing up in areas of east King County that normally receive up to 120-inces of rain a year. You live in southern England, I believe...?

""We've calculated that we will have the lowest river flows in the state of Washington that we've had in the last 64 years,” Bellon tells us.

That means already farmers in the Yakima Valley, where most of the produce buyers do their deals, only use 60 percent of the water they need to grow. Large cities like Seattle, Everett and Tacoma will likely still have adequate water supply, but if you live in rural parts of the state, experts say you'll likely have water restrictions by June.

Friday the governor released a new drought map with 13 new watersheds, most in western Washington..."

Wow! For a moment I thought I had accidentally clicked on a climate thread. Interesting article by the pagan, by the by.

    Grinding & Max Prop Negoiations

Agreed Hoyt, The only connection between this thread and climate is that it was too dam cold to work on the build. However I have only myself to blame as I started the whole topic off by a post with photos proving it so :D However it is a topic worthy of A thread. :p BACK to the build, I'm continuing with grinding out the shocked spots resulting from the removal of those dam strakes. I have completed about 50% down along one side with no majour surprises. Within the next week or so i'll post photos. On another note, I have been doing a lot of research into the Max Prop brand of feathering propellers. I'm into intense negotiations on a used one for sale at a good price. The downside is, it is disassembled and as such can not be checked for wear. According to PYI who sell and service Max Prop the blade play should not exceed 1/8 in. by much otherwise vibration under power is likely. The upside is that they can be rebuilt back to like new condition, the downside is the cost could be as high as $2000 Can. with tax & shipping included. So what seems like a good price could result in an extremely expensive piece of polished ornamentation. Checking this prop before purchase is not only a must but involves quite a bit of work. The owner is in another province and does not want the prop. out of his representative here hands nor does he have any way to set the prop up for a wear test. Opportunity to own this normally "out of my reach" piece of kit has once again caused me to reach deep into my soul and come up with a solution. Searching among my stockpile of goodies(Hoyt can attest) I located a short piece of 1 1/4 in. stainless shafting with a prop taper. My plan, is to assemble the used Max Prop on this shaft and check for wear. Statuned for the results :?:

How may times do you have to learn this lesson George? Don't you have a few boxes full of potentially great deals, that turned out to be highly polished, chrome plated turds?

Simply put, if the actual owner isn't willing to permit a reasonable inspection, with at least partial reassembly and a set of micrometers, then, drag out your poop polish and get ready for the possibility of another "prize" being added to the fleet.

This, I trust, you're going to do *before* any money changes hands.....

I understand the owner's reluctance to have it leave his possession, but if it can't be verified as functional, it's value is very, very marginal. Like, $300 max, more like half of that in case it's an expensive paperweight.

I have a few of those myself......

Just disassembled my Autostream 22" adjustable prop to match the hub taper now I've finally made the missing parts for my lathe taper turning attachment, so I wish you well with it. I'm looking forward to having more of my propulsion system completed. $85 for 1m of 35mm 316L and a couple hours work is a hell of a lot more palatable than $600+ for a commercial shop to do it for me.

    Max Prop Adventure

Paul, can't say you're out in left field there, I do indeed have a few sparkly good for nothing expensive jewels displayed in plain walk by view much the same as Cosco and WallieMarts marketing. The marketing in this case involves kicking oneself in the *** on each pass. After 70 plus years I try my best to "Walk Softly and carry a big stick" Thus the 20 hrs. of research including two phone calls to PYI and fondling an identical Max Prop on a friends boat. From what I can gather these props when looked after (greased yearly) generally have a lifespan of 10 to 15 yrs. before rebuild. Depending on the hours of usage of course. Between the owner being in another province and having a contract with a boat sales company in this province I have to admit it's been a frustrating two weeks trying to get my hands on this thing in order to test it. It has something to do with which items are not included with the boat. However I think they have it finally ironed out as the prop is supposed to be available for me to assemble, grease and test for wear tomorrow afternoon. Should be interesting

You got that right Peter, "No ticky no lawnley". As far as I can gather it's the wear between the blade's gear teeth and the gear teeth on the central cone that causes the slop and resultant vibration. If lucky, replacement of the central cone might be sufficient to bring the play within tolerances for a few more seasons. Worst case scenario vibrations remain tolerable until I make Hobart and locate a certain machinist. We can polish the max Prop as a bookend and install that CPP you have stored under the bench :D

Actually the CPP is in pieces, soaking in kerosene ATM. The engine with g/box is tucked away under the boat waiting its turn.

I am quite impressed with the simplicity of the Sabb CPP. I could make one myself. The g/box is a *little* different story, however.....

    Still thinking on it, though.

Assembling & Checking The Max Prop

Thru the jigs & the reels with a reasonable deposit I got my hands on the prop. to take back to my shop for assembly. This with the understanding if it was out of tolerance I could return it for my deposit. Anymore I couldn't ask for. Max Prop photos #1 to #9 show the assembly with the moving gear parts greased for testing. The stationary yard stick allowed me to check for play which was well within the 1/8 in. tolerance in both directions , fully open and fully feathered. For the full $700 advertised Kijiji price I am a happy camper. I will now re bore my 3 blade fixed prop as a spare and can go forward with the design and fabrication of a new 1 1/4 in. dia. shaft, tube, and cutlass. Meanwhile back to the grinding and glassing of the hull to keel attachment area.

Very good, I paid 3X that for my 22" Autostream and was quite happy to do so.

Pity you're not closer, I've got my taper turning attachment dialed in damn near perfectly to cut a 1:12 taper at the moment. One application of lapping compound resulted in better than 90% contact area between prop shaft & hub. Could have done your shaft in no time at all.

I now be an expert.... my shaft ended up costing me $82 AUD which is way, way better than the price I was quoted by a professional shop. Sometimes I think I should get into this recreational boat metalwork/machining caper given the prices being charged. But I have a life.....

Thanks Perry, good stuff. I have those sites tagged for future interesting reading, speaking of which after 40yrs. i'm now deep into my old text books on electronics in prep for my HAM (Amateur Radio)License. I have opportunity for about the umpteen time of writing it and with all the gear accumulated and stashed away it's time to activate it before both the gear and the operator become obsolete. :D

Peter do you have a RAAF Base close by. Possibly they still have a few De Havilland Buffalo or Caribou transports on the go. During my De Havilland days I did the design work and overseen the install of the UHF comm. gear in both these along with the on trial loaners we sent out to VietNam with the U.S Army Air Force. I was thinking possibly on their next visit to Canada they might be kind enough to do me a favour and fly my fixed prop and new shaft return out to you for machining. :p Getting serious it would be great if you were closer Max Prop be gone CPP Be copied :D (out of patent brands of course)
