The company I work for in South Africa recently did an advert in Madagascar which features some nice traditional outriggers as used in one of the rural villages there for fishing - worth looking at for the boats.

    Link to the advert:

The marketing director has kindly offered me access to more footage of the boats which I hope to get permission to post if there is interest.

Making of the advert if anyone is interested in background to the village:

Good advert. It has been a while but from memory its old man and the sea theme (Hemingway) done well in my opinion.

From a design point of view I would have liked to see the craft beat to weather in the storm sequence. Still pictures of the craft would be appreciated.

    Hi

I will chat to our marketing department and see what I can arrange in terms of pictures of the craft - maybe I can extract some stills from extra footage and put it here with their permission.

    Cheers

    Pictures - first sets

Our marketing team has granted permission to post screen shots of some of the videos we took. I need to blur out the faces, so will post those I don't need to blur first, and add more later illustrating screen shots of what I think are interesting aspects.

Worth noting that no boats were modified in any way for the advert, nor was the village staged. This is how they live and use their boats. The crew just rocked up and filmed as it fitted in with our philosphy of being consistent. No professional actors, just the locals and their boats.

I am putting this here for general interest on the construction, and who knows how much longer this traditional and very old method of boat building will last in this region, though it is clear they are still building boats this way at present. It makes for a nice record. If someone (who is genuinely an expert) wishes to add a comparitive description to Pacific boats that would be most welcome. (Eg lateen vs crab claw rig). As I post pictures I will point out aspects I think are of interest, but please pitch in, or correct my terminology with some degree of patience - this sort of outrigger is not my area of expertise, I just think it is worth sharing a piece of living history in African boat building.

With many thanks to Prudential's marketing team who were kind enough to release this material for me to peruse and take screen shots of their material. They are a very loving, considerate and gentle team, so please don't make any assumptions on their impact in the area - you can PM if you want to know anything related to this. Of interest it is close to a tourist spot, so clearly this has not impacted on building these beautiful craft.

(PS Prudential doesn't sell insurance, we are an asset manager based in South Africa, and not connected to Prudential USA. Rather we are a subsidiary of M&G Investments in the UK.)

First picture - Two aka's - only one ama. Ama not transferable to other side.

    Spar attachment to mast

Rope protected by plastic pipe, spar simply slides up the mast when hauled up. Shows some interior framing and how mast connected to akas. Note small bowsprit!

    Akas connected on other side

    Simply a peg and slot.

(Anyone's boats feeling a bit over engineered compared to this?)
