This is actually Spirit of Emu which was a later trimaran once again designed by Tony Grainger. Ocean Emu has had a fairly recent rebuild at Ashby boatbuilders and is looking very smart these days.

Does anyone know if Ocean Emu or Spirit of Emu ever went head to head with Verbatim/Bullfrog (or her sister ship) and how they went?

Verbatim (then renamed Australian Maid) was a lighter boat and easily beat Ocean Emu when they went head to head at SOMR in Westernport Bay. The Emu's were a bit heavy which made them quite sticky and uncompetitive in light conditions. Pretty good when the wind picked up though.

I'll see if I can find some race reports to scan. I know Paul Nudd did one on the SOMR where Ocean Emu and Verbatim went head to head.

The good "ole" Moxie. Weld put a "geriatric" mast and sails and won rather easily the 1980 Ostar. The tri is now in France http://www.moxie.fr and used for chartering. You can discover a lot of historical multihulls at http://www.goldenoldies.biz site of a french association of people restoring old multihulls. It's worth to look, a lot of Newivk and Greene boats, even Gulf Streamer!!! plus some nice proas.

As I recall Moxie was donated to the USN academy.
To bad they couldn't figure out something to do with it, rather than all the "good" boats going to France.

I heard today that Moxie was damaged, maybe beyond repair? Is that true?

meantime here is Gulfstreamer, taken by one of my customers a couple of years ago in the Med

The USN academy throwed the boat, as they thought it not seaworthy. That shows the mental ability of the USN (and a lot of Navies). But they were correct, they contacted Newick and the boat sold or given back. Very few American are interested in multihulls, they do prefer motor boats as I have seen in Florida's marinas; a few sail boats, close to none multis, thousands and thousands of motor boats.
Lot of Frenchies like multihulls, the races draw a lot of people et are followed by the press, TV etc...There is also a strong group of sponsors. There are more multis moored in La Trinité marina than in all the American continent.
Happily the good boats are gone to France where they are restored, maintained and sailed, otherwise these boats would be rotting in some backyard.
