Hi! I was wondering if anyone has had any experience using the paramarine software package from Qinetiq? Specifically I have been having problems importing a surface model from Rhino. Does anyone know how you would normally import a model in this way? Thanks!

Check the help file for export options from Rhino that are suitable for Paramarine, if available. Also do not be afraid to use the STEP format instead of the IGES one, as Rhino is very good with STEP. If no joy with a standard IGES output you can customise the Rhino IGES options to suit Paramarine. You will of course need to know what options Paramarine can accept.

Worth checking the Rhino Forum as well, as most likely this has been done fine.

I note Paramarine is based on the Parasolid engine. I would suggest trying that option first.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try a few other file types and see if I have any luck that way.

    Hi Don

Paramarine is parasolid based and as such your best bet for exporting from Rhino to Paramarine is use the parasolid export option. As with any conversion there can still be issues and you might have to check the tolerances that you are working to within Rhino in order to improve the export.

As Suki mentioned the STEP format is also a good option however this is an additional import module within Paramarine so depending on your licence configuration you may not have this available.

If you have any specific issues then post them up and I may be able to help further.

Dear DoZ, Thank you for your reply and your offer of help. Have you used paramarine in the past?

Oh yes I have used Paramarine for the past 6 or 7 years and spent far too many hours in front of it!

As DoZ says, step is pretty good for this, though you do need the specific licence module for this.

Thanks for your replies. I have managed to import the model in the STEP file format which produces a number of "sheets". Could anyone tell me how to merge the sheets in order to create one solid body?

    Hi Don

You need to use the patch_sheet object to join all the sheets together and then you have two options from there.

If the result is a port side sheet you could use the the hull_surfaces_3 object to create a symmetrical solid or

If the result is an enclosed body you could try the patch_solid object

The final option would be to make a solid in Rhino first and then import using STEP
