I think a great cruising boat could be cheaply powered with the 2 engine , one shaft concept.

Many (5 or 6 Decades) worth of landing craft used this concept.

    Frequently 2 - 6-71 with a common tranny.

Either engine could be disconnected under way , although the boat had to be shut down to reconnect.

A 3-71 and a 6-71 could be paired the 3-71 for long ocean work at SL 1 or so and the 6-71 or the pair used inshore where fuel was available.

Sadly the concept of 2 engines of different size today would not allow much canabalization as the old Detroits would allow.
