    Man the population are all cabin fever nuts now by the time spring breaks looking for the colour green underfoot --- That would completely drive them off the deep end --

    Big day tomorrow the glassing on of the fin and skeg shells begins, dam glad to finally get there .

    Prep. Work Glassing On Fin & Skeg

    Since this is hopefully a permanent appendage I thought it best to re check the hulls transverse leveling and do any necessary fine tuning . My tools, a line and line level as well as a plumb bob hung from the inside center of the orig. keel. The idea being if the hull was transversely level the plumb bob should point to the center of my gunnel to gunnel levelling line.( It is about 1/16 th. out) Switching the line level end for end indicates level in both directions which is within this shops tolerances :)
    Ok now that we have the hull set up transversely we will have a much better chance setting up the fin and skeg likewise. More important is to properly set them up longitudinally otherwise we could be unintentionally sailing in circles. with the fin and skeg approx. set in place, I to ran a line from one end of the shop to the other about 1/2 in. above but as close as possible to their longitudinal center. It took me some fiddling but I got it roughly set in place. Fine tuning, I dropped a plumb bob down both at the bow and stern and re set my line attachment points to suit. Now it was just a matter of placing a few temp. wedges under the lip of the fin's and skeg's shell one side or the other to match their longitudinal centers to the line and they could be tabbed in place. Once the tabs were set up using my good old Bondo with Hair, to prevent air bubbles in the glassing on process, I filled the seam along the fin/skeg to hull joint. A little touch up sanding and I am ready for the glassing. To inject job variety I will also attend to a few other tedious tasks. I have to; (1)complete the fin to forefoot joint, (2) Glass up a filler for the taper section back at the "Brewer Munch " which resulted from reducing the length of the skeg and moving it further aft. (3) Before attaching the Skeg I must pattern, bore and tap the skegs weldament bottom to accommodate a stainless shoe which will extend aft to hold the rudders lower bearing. (4) Also, pattern, bore and tap the skegs weldament aft end to accommodate a vertical stainless reinforcing flatbar that will both strengthen the skeg and the shoe's attachment.
    Oh almost forgot, if anyone happens to be driving by drop in I have cold beer and enough material to fill in those 42, 3/16th holes left over from removal of the 140lb. nose cap :D

    George,

    Great photos. I had a moment with your (Ted) Brewer's Munch comment about the gap between keel & skeg & the referenced Brewer's Droop, consequent upon iced tinnies & keel hole filling. Aren't you both a little snowed in for visitors to call in?

    Perry, thank you for the kind words. Believe it or not thus far this winter England has had a bigger one time snow storm accumulation than we have had here in the Halifax N.S. area. . This Fall and winter to date we have had four snow falls, 1.5 cm , 2 cm., 2 cm. and three nights ago 1cm. We have had about 6 days of frost since Christmas down to - 5 C to -10 C. Past 2 days + 4 C and +5 C with heavy rain today. The snow has never stayed more than 3 days since winter began most times melted the next day. Tomorrow + 5 C cloudy. 7 day forecast coldest day -3 C mostly around -3 C to +2 C sunny cloudy periods . This part of Nova Scotia has a mini climate with very good winters . Nothing compared to my former home in Western Newfoundland where typical global warming winter is now ave. 1.5M snow but pre. global warming used to be up to 4M. Yup cold tinnies are becoming in fashion year around :D

    I had about 38" of snow here yesterday, it was terrible as you might imagine, with us Floridians that haven't seen or aren't very accustomed to this sort of atmospheric insult. I promptly turned the image into a screen saver and shut off the computer . . .

    I haven't had to deal with snow since I stopped going to Antarctica for my summer holiday cruise.

    Don't miss the stuff at all, either. Tasmania has a very civilised climate, not too hot, not freezing cold. Also not too many people, so don't think of moving here.

    Mmmmm - 38in. of Florida snow, I think I should read between the lines here, horizontal deflection lines that is, think you should go out and give that antenna pole a twist. :D,

    PDW almost made it next door to you ,(Australia), (From the RCAF to the RAAF), but even then they said it was a Devil of a job to get into Tasmania :p
    Putting all jokes aside we have a Lady Customer from Tasmania ( Chopper Instructor that visits our B&B every second year or so. knows a bit about the beautiful place I does, Wineglass bay --Daytona Beach with mountains, The Hazards, No Daytona Beach, just Mountains. The giant Granite Bolder on Mt. Amos track(trail) bigger than any Glacial dropping at Peggys Cove, Bluestone Bay, a typical Newfoundland coastline, where i'd feel right at home :)

    Get your boat finished and then you could come & visit. I have a spare mooring for visitors out the front of my place. Wineglass Bay is pretty spectacular and there are other places. Often with no other boats there which is how I like it. I live on the D'Entrecasteaux Channel further south, with Bruny Island to my east.

    As for the weather, it's a bit too warm ATM - epoxy paint is kicking off a bit too fast for my liking. I hate painting anyway so any excuse to do something else is a good excuse. Unfortunately that doesn't get the hull painted.....

    Fin To Hull And Fin To Forefoot Join

    Puttering on here, ground out a taper of sorts and glassed the fin to forefoot join. Those two screws are just temp. and were removed. With a little filler and sanding it shaped up nice ready for glassing to the hull. I also filled the fin to hull joint seam and with a little sanding it too will be ready for glassing to the hull which will be my next task.

    Thanks Perry, prices seem reasonable. I'm going to stick that site in my favorites for when I'm prop. ready. Possibly the Canadian Dollar will have spiraled upward by then :D
