I like them both. The front cover of a book about a designer couldn't be better in my opinion-you have a design on the same page with the result of a design-a Jim Young boat hauling ***. It brings the whole deal together-well done.

The Rocket looks great - I remember the stir when the first one was launched.

Can't wait to read the final version of this...

Thanks guys, I'll consider all comments.
Jim now has found another shot of Rocket 31 which he wants me to use instead. I'll do so - but this is the end, final, finito, no more.

Not being a graphic design person, but having read lots of books, I would think the colour pic should be larger than the lines drawing and/or maybe not black. It seems a bit overpowering. What about having the lines drawing superimposed in white over the upper part of the color pic, assuming the original pic has more sail and ocean? (Does that even make sense?)

Okay, here's a more conventional cover; Young Nicholson (Young 11) on Wellington Harbour; it's always blowing a full gale there.

I liked the fact the first cover showed how radical the design of that boat was. The boat on that last cover could be anything. The cover now appeals to Jim Young fans only. The first one might get picked up by anyone who likes radical boat designs. Personally I would be more likely to pic the first one up as the design appeals. Depends on the target demographic. IMO of course.

What about the first one you posted with title at top like second one then shot of radical design with more water below then the lines plan perhaps like a watermark across the bottom 1/3 at smaller scale so boat and ocean and title stay dominant but lines plan there subtle.
    JFWIW I like first concept.

Yes, agree the Young 11 could be any boat.
So redid the first attempt with a bit of artsy colour change in Rocket 29 line drawing - I'm happy with this.
Josh Tucker from Norths posted on facebook this shot of his boy on Extreme; check out the extreme beam, narrow waterline on this beauty.

The majestical James Young did not like the lines drawing of the R29 on the cover, thought it too "extreme" - I think he's off course ... but there you are - so we sat down together and I redid the job in InDesign using the lines of his famous Fiery Cross, world's first canting keel design, 1959, to replace it ... and Sir James, at last, is happy with the result. Whew! Looking at it now, needs some retouching and clean up.

    JIm is negotiating with Boatbooks.
We still haven't sorted out that MOST important part of a book: the foreword.
He is wading through turgid and very boring waters with it ... and it has to be edited way down - like to nothing, imo.
    But he is determined.

On a slightly different topic I was wondering how Jacques and the owner of miranda keep their foils in position. Do they use wedges or some other means?
