Hi, I`m a mechanical engineer w. some boat design experience and I like to proceed with FEM and CFD analsys. I know the theory basics and I`m in search of user friendly, low cost softwares for some aproximative:D results (I know, it is not easy to have them this way, but anyway) for improvement of structure and shape of composite power and sailing boats in range of 20-40ft.
I`d like to hear your suggestions, thanks in advance and regards!

it has a very good price/quality ratio, many naval architects use it.

However, my opinion is that the costs of CFD and FEA softwares, plus the cost of the engineering time, is not worth in the 20-40 ft range of boats.

How does one get this free NASA software for US citizens? Is there a website to go to? Who do you ask for approval?

    this should get you started.

I have not been back in the US, so i have yet to try to download and setup this software. May not do it anyway, since I am not an engineer and GiD seems capable.

Have a look at Michlet from Leo Lazauskas.
It's does CFD based on Mitchell's theory. It's free and very stable.
You can download Michlet from http://www.cyberiad.net/michlet.htm
