paddlewheeler recuction drive

    Here's a smaller version of the bus drive. The fellow told me when he came up to dock it, instead of backing off the throttle, he would just downshift to a lower gear.

    Cool idea samsam!

    Only thing I don't like about it, is that it is essentially the same as the bus drive, except replaced the cheap rear axle with a little gearbox it looks like.

    The beauty of the bus drive was that the only special part was the sprocket to the wheel. This design has 2 special parts.

    It would be interesting to know what the final drive ratio is. My guess would be that that gear box has a much lower gear ratio than a bus or truck differential would have and maybe he already had it or bought it real cheap.

    Looking at the size of it, I don't think it would be rated for much power.
    Big gear reduction boxes capable of 1000 + ft lbs are huge!
    Looks like a pretty lightly built system.

    There could be a huge difference in parts depending on if you want to cruise the odd time, or be able to put major hours on the boat and run it harder.

    the chain thing is second to an actual gear drive with a heavy duty auto rear end .

    of course the rear end would be all lightened up & tricked out .

    yea........ this is very important.
    must have the correct ratios to operate the paddle wheels.

    IN ALL ACTUALITY........ THE BUS DRIVE "IS" WHAT I`M LOOKING FOR .

    NO SO MUCH THE DIESEL & THE HUGE HEAVY PARTS LIKE THE BUS DRIVE.

    WHAT I WANT IS ALL AUTO MOTIVE .

    I DO WANT TO THANK WHO EVER IT WAS THAT POSTED THE LATEST PICTURE OF THE AUTOMOTIVE ENGINE & TRANSMISSION MOUNTED TO THE DRIVE IN THE BOAT .

    MY IDEA IS TO MOUNT THE PADDLES DIRECTLY TO THE AXELS.....OF SAY A 1 TON 12 BOLT HEAVY DUTY FORD (ETC) REAR END .
    this part is not a problem....... the overall problem is the correct ratios of the paddle wheels .

    I AM BUILDING A SIDE PADDLEWHEELER/S .
    I do have an interest in a stern wheeler but not at this time........ although I am very interested in any paddle wheeler ....... one & all...... keep posting the info & photos !

    it may take awhile ....... buy sooner or later I/we will have it down to a `T .
    just like downtown..........

    It's settled then, just butcher a tractor, leave the engine and transmission together, and install shafts from the rear axles, out of the sides of the boat to the paddles.

    The tractor will have the gear ratio you need without any other drives or chains at all.

    For a boat that big, don't cheap out on a v6 gas engine, use the diesel tractor engine that is made to work lots. You will save a lot of money on fuel, and it will likely be much more reliable.

    I thought this was a very simple drive system by using the gears of he car for reduction also gives a reverse

    Really that is identical to the bus drive system, only difference being the powertrain is still in the vehicle, and the paddle is tiny, instead of large.
