Tohatsu 9.8 how to fix so it won't turn?

    I have a sliding bracket on a multihull build and will always be steering with the tiller. the only way I have been able to stop it from turning is by tying it up with some wire. :D ther must be a better way. I see a threaded hole directly below the oil light on the front of the motor, but can't find any reference to it anywhere in the manual. Any help appreciated.

    I have looked and looked but found nothing. There appear to be two bolts that when tightened should increase the steering friction, but I have read elsewhere that that probably wont hold it good and steady, so I went ahead and wired the thing up with some insulated electrical wire:rolleyes:
    It is a tohatsu 9.8 xls epul. Once the thing is down there in the water it is not easy to adjust.

    I had the same engine and there was no lever under it to lock the steering. I have never seen that on any motor. The only thing I know of is the friction screw on the side of the leg. You can't miss it . It has a spring on it. Just tighten that up and will lock the steering.

    At least there is ‘‘EP’’ in there and it's a 4-stroke, so I hope an 3V1625000M kit will fit, but inquiry is required to be sure . . :idea:

    aha. that must be what those threaded holes are for.

    Here it seems to come labeled with that last number, but it has website info of the vendor's stated on it, so maybe this is an edited "OEM label" . . . ? ?

    Inquire whether your High Trust version has the same fit for the Steering Lock as the standard 9.8 hp version. Often a High Trust version has a modified next size up leg mounted in conjunction with the larger prop. Maybe a leg from the 15 hp series, with modified engine fitting and adjusted gearing, is used in this case. I don't know if this affects the Steering Lock assembly . . ? ?

    I have a 2017 Tohatsu 9.8hp 4stroke. It has a friction screw on the motor leg which is totally impractical and is now stripped and useless.
    I tilt the motor when sailing and being unlockable it flops from side to side on each tack if you forget to move it.
    I have a neat DIY solution which allows the motor to move freely when in use and locks it in the centre position as soon as the motor is fully tilted.
    Made it myself from scrap materials in my garage. No pins or clasps or clamps and it uses existing holes on the motor so no modification to the motor body is required.
    It is so simple I wonder now why it took me so long to invent it. Hard to believe that Tohatsu don't have it as an after market accessory rather than the lock they sell which reduces the motor's functionality.

    I have a Tohatsu 6HP and use a quick Fist clamp to fix it when needed. The advantage, when compared to the Tohatsu kit is that can be released at any time if required...

    Had a Merc 4 HP (a Tohatsu, third party labeled) As has been said there should be a screw (usually with a wing nut on it) to tighten. However after the first few times, it never stopped the engine from turning. It could not be tightened enough to hold the engine in place. I tried various solutions but none worked.

    I currently have the same problem with my 9.8 HP Suzuki. It has a lever that is supposed to stop the engine from turning. But it is now too loose. I haven't figured out how to tighten it up.
