Most often if I need a bit off then I go on youtube or browse the www for something boating, and even though I have seen probably thousands of boats, every once in a while you find something inspiring and appealing.

And then I want to build something like that :D

To think you can spend a lifetime and never get it all...
Now THAT is something worth pursuing ;)

I know where you're coming from Brother Fanie.
There's a boat show this weekend in Perth, but I'm not going. What I want and what I can afford makes me depressed.

I used to dream about having a big boat, now it's a nightmare.

Its a Zen thing - its not that boats are all that wonderful, its just a psychological need for us old men to create something that works, and stretch the grey matter in the process.

I have read a lot of Fanies build blog - and thats about the hardest way to float about on water and get a way from the family that I can think of :)

I have a build blog ? But the get away from family may be true at times, possibly because they know stuff about you :p or maybe one knows all they are going to say anyway... and you have to go somewhere so you can tell them about things ;)

The most fish I caught was with a small(er) boat. Possibly because you didn't scream past the nice spots. When I started fishing I won the first competition with one spinner. It was all I had, a Celta no4.

LOL, going for a much bigger spinner might not have done it :D

Boat shows are depressing, it's the same stuff over and over especially the inland shows, almost never anything new except the price tag. If you don't have millions then they won't even let you on the boat. With the dull old fashions I wear anyway  My friend likes dressing smart, so I let him get on the boat then when he gets down I ask him "how does she walk...?"

Let face it. If you make something yourself that beats a fancy expensive rig, boy does that sit well. Just think how much they have to spend to get ahead again.

Poida, why don't you sit and plan what it is you really need. I must add here one have to be realistic. Then work your way out to the hull, and most of the time if you get control of the tool shed's lock and you manage to nail two pieces of something together, you have started.

    Then just don't stop.

Everything you do from there on is one step closer. Like the elementary, Mr Watson, stated, the biggest problem is the grey stuff, it's limiting us. I was here the other day working out if I want to spend the $ for some laser cutting when I realized I can simply make the part myself. I made it in less time it would have taken to cad the thing up.

So if someone asks me how I am, I can honestly say, from the shoulders on downwards I'm ok :D

    Pardon me Mr Watson.

You speak of us old men, well kindly speak for yourself I am only 67 a young stud in the prime of my life. (now where's that bloody walking frame!)

Fanie, I have plans, yes plans. Actually they are sitting in a draw behind me. About ten years ago I bought some plans to build a wooden dingy, a Glen-L design but then got occupied doing other things, but I'll get around to it.

I love boats because they are made and I love making; and because they are vessels.

It is important to know your vessel, and to know whether you should put the vessel in the liquid, or the liquid in the vessel...

This might be my favourite boat:
