38 Team Warlock Cat Restomod Project

Hi all, I saved this 1992 Team Warlock 38 Ocean Express Cat from a likely date with the fiberglass shredder last year. After a little reading, it looks to be the only 38' Tom Stolarz ever built. It's a center pod, but not like most others I've seen. Double stepped sponsons, with a 14" stepped setback stern and a deep center V that looks like it was designed for triple inboards.

The cockpit config is going to be modified and cut down from current stand up design to a more modern roadster look. Below is a few quick sketches of my proposed mods.

But I would love to hear from anyone who knows more about this early 90's hull design and it's performance characteristics. The engines will be twin turbo 800hp/1400ft.lb Duramax Diesels, while transmissions and drive choices are still being explored. Calculating drive placement and height is where I can use some definite input. She was previously equipped with SSM #3's.

That's a good looking boat. What does the cockpit currently look like?

 

Cockpit is early 90's stand up bolsters, single seat right hand drive with split for cabin entrance Then two seats on the left. Single section with 4 stand ups in the second row. The flat engines cover cleared BDS blowers with dual 4's and 2' to spare.. In the pics the seats are moved around a bit with the twins on the right and the single captains seat setting back in the engine compartment.

It has a windscreen (not shown) that makes it totally impossible to get in or out of the cockpit from anywhere but the stern. That's half the reason I'm looking to cut it down. No walk ways outboard of cockpit, and that console area is 5' tall inside and 3' tall looking from the bow. I'm 6'2 and can only barley see the sponson tips from the capt chair without the windscreen.. No hatches up front either, just totally impractical for anything but heavy off shore running. Even compared to the few 36' cats Tom built, its very tall.

But I'm open to suggestions.

What is you intended use for the boat? How do you see yourself out on the water enjoying this thing?

 

Mostly river cruising and poker runs, with possibly a few days offshore. The cabin area was never finished, so blank canvas in there. I also plan to use it for promoting alternative fuels, reason for the Dmax power.

Here is a video of my last diesel. Looking to build on the lessons learned and maybe set a new top speed record for diesel powered craft while at it. Not a tough one to break, but this is a heavy boat as she sets...

 

Interesting looking hull; should be a nice boat. We were involved in a 70' planing cat-yacht project in the early 2000s that has lines remarkably similar to those, except no steps. Was never sure how the lines had been developed but we tested a scale model of the thing before it was built. The scale model was 16' loa with a 115HP Johnson on the back...tons of fun.

 

Back in the early 90's these lines had to be pretty out there from the norm. Has that F117 stealth fighter radar deflecting angles thing going. I keep wanting to paint it matte black or the new digital navy camo.

The steps are pretty small compared to today's standards. From what I've read it was mostly Skater and Warlock first racing stepped cats back then. What I still can't seem to find anyone with info on this center pod design. It's almost like they took the 21' Vee, I owned above, and strapped two 38' sponsons to it. She could be rigged tipple inboards fairly easy...
