" Most of it is already in the water so if it melts, it will hardly make a difference."
Hardly a difference and NO difference aren't the same. :D

I said "it will hardly MAKE a difference"... not that it is" hardly a difference". That is different, if you really want to go semantic.

And that is exactly what you wrote in your own comment

    "do a little experiment Masrapido.
Take a glass with water and icecubes and mark the water level on the glass, not the ice sticking up, just the water level.
When the ice completely melts, check the level.
It will be exactly the same."

Or, as Masrapido said, "it will hardly make a difference".

Ok, now I am going to make some holes in your little boat, gringo! Caramba...

    :D

In hindsight, I could have said "it would make hardly ANY difference AT ALL", but, someone would pick something wrong with that too and pull my hair for it as well (yobarnacle...).

    ;)

Wow.... You use wikipedia for your argument...

But the last photo I couldn't dislike, hey.

All I can say is take note of the word "COULD" rise the levels. I do not have the time to try and educate you on physics of meteorology. And on the difference between "could" and "will". Not all of the ice would end up in the sea. Some would end up in the ground, some would end up in the air, and none of us would care as we could be gone by that stage as the weather and the temperature would go locos enough to wipe us out.

You usanians keep thinking in isolation. No event on earth can be thought of as if it is an isolated event. If all that ice melts, it would go into the air first, not into the sea. Greenland, remember? The ice is on dry land, so if it melts, where will it go?

    Into the air.

Yes, yes... some of it would sip down and into the sea. That is EXACTLY my point. If yo cannot see it, quoting wikipedia will only make it worse. Believing in wikipedia is akin to believing in cnn or foxnews. If you do, something is wrong with you...

If Greenland ice melts, then Antarctica ice will melt too. I do not see your nat. geo losers talking about THAT 2 km thick cheet of ice. Greenland's total ice surface is under 1.7 000 000 km2, whereas Antarctica's ice shee tis 14 000 000 km. 7.5 times BIGGER.

That is what you should worry about, if you are all that concerned about the ice melting and sea level rising. If Antarctica sheds its ice it's hasta la vista to all of us. The mountains will become overcrowded in a jiffy. Then, all those crazy, and armed, people will start killing others to make some space, and then imagine the stampede of 6 billions of people. In a small space...

None of you will even get the chance to try and go south. If some make it, we'll show you the finger and push you all back to the ocean. See how long will you last without food.

    :D

That didn't take long for cia/nsa to react!

( a little of paranoia spreading back to the usa can't hurt, eh)

That's the isolation I am referring to. If you care to compare the number of articles and space given to Greenland, to that given to Antarctica, THEN you will see how much more is Greenland published and talked about.

Four pitiful links for the last 20 years of ice melting paranoia from the usa "scientists" is a bit low count in my books.

Scientists have been thinking about Antarctic ice melting for a long time. If you want hundreds more articles, google or bing it.

There are at least two flaws in your argument.

The first flaw is a failure to defend your original (incorrect) statements...
    and...
And the second flaw in your argument is rather than sticking to the specific topic of discussion (whether melting icecaps are capable of causing significant sea level rise) you instead go on the attack and raise a strawman argument about the veracity of Wikipedia. Had you either read the original Wikipedia article or studied the accompanying graph, you would have seen numerous footnotes to the original sources. These include the University of Colorado, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization, NOAA, the US EPA, the IPCC, Geophysical Research Letters, The National Academies Press, The Third National Climate Assessment, as well as a number of scientific studies. Had you actually read the whole Wikipedia article you would also have seen that I copied just a small portion. And you also could have seen that they presented an extensive bibliography for further study.

You, on the other hand, presented no scientific references or showed any personal calculations. What you did do is make sweeping statements about the apparent stupidity of Americans, which unfortunately had the unintended effect of casting serious questions about the basic intelligence of the good people of Chile. I'm afraid you won't be selected as an ambassador of good will from Chile to the rest of the world.

A little comic relief -- which will it be?

Angélique aka Angel (only by name)

The ice you're talking about in this experiment is sea ice which is already in the seas.

Melting land ice (whatever the cause is) is adding water to the seas, or to your glass in the case of this experiment . . .

There is no way this could ever happen though as it's anti-human.
