Early Australian C Class cats

Thanks for your answer. Do you have any other information about this yellow wing, plans, datas or other, I would like to redraw it in the book.

At Steve's request I've been sorting through a lot of ancient family pictures and papers for American C class history in the late 1960s to early 1970s. The first pass got posted on Sailing Anarchy. Steve also posted more information about his father's wing there.

Some more pictures on my father-in-law's work on the Hubbard's Sealion, reborn as Mountain Lion, are below. The idea behind the first solid wing was the covering would balloon into a Clark Y type airfoil on the windward side. Three panels were zipped together with a prototype Talon zipper. (I worked at Talon at the time.) The wing didn't work and was replaced by a more conventional wing mast. That was what he sailed against Weathercock in the 1972 trials. The boat was probably faster, but Weathercock was better sailed. My father-in-law had almost no catamaran experience and hadn't raced since his teens.

He retired to a Gougeon built trimaran, Trillied, and spent the next several years sailing with his wife down the Mississippi, around Florida, and up the Atlantic coast. The boat was then refurbished by the Gougeons and was sailed back to Florida. As far as I know it's still there, though both of my in-laws have died.

Lohring posted this image over at Sailing Anarchy on their C Class site: Coyote in 1975.
So maybe this is the Coyote I've been trying to find ... but think maybe I was mistaken because this Coyote has flaps like Nylex - and my (wonky) memory is of a total wing.

 

I think it is Coyote III in 1975, it is a real wing, before the IV, with without transparency wing, and the V with yellow/white wing in 1980

Sleipner? Is that Dulcinae?

The C-class D2, ”Dulcinea”, was designed and built by Ib Pors Nielsen, who died in late 2012. He, Gert Frederiksen and I were close friends, sharing ideas and following each other’s projects closely. When Gert and I were in Thorpe Bay for the 1969 challenge, Ib Pors Nielsen were with us most of the time and supported our campaign like a coach or manager.

Dulcinea had an un-stayed full wing mast and no rigging or even trapeze wires. The wing had a 25% flap from the foot and 60% up the mast. The wing was supported by a 2.5m diameter ball bearing system integrated in the foot of the wing and the deck. The balls were Inflated rubber balls. *The boat was launched a few days before Sleipner, hence the numbers, D2 for Dulcinea and D3 for Sleipner.

On the first outing, where the boat was helmed by Paul Elvstrom, the mast broke and then quickly repaired within a few days, however we never got a chance for testing the two boats together before the challenge races. Later we did meet on the water and there was little doubt the choice of the more conservative *Sleipner as the defender had been right.
